Perennial American watchmaker Timex has pumped out some of the most well-loved and rugged watches in recent memory, but the latest release is a nod to legacy. While the trademark focus on durability, substance and affordability remains paramount, the Giorgio Galli S1 Automatic pays a powerful homage to one of the brand’s great leaders.
For the past two decades, the watchmaker has been under the direction of Milan-based creative Giorgio Galli. A recognised designer with a history of refined success, Galli has helped redefine the 165-year-old business for the modern age, introduced re-issue pieces that add a contemporary touch to the traditional scope. In 2021, the designer was tasked with creating what the brand refers to as ‘the most Timex ‘Timex’ ever made’. His response? The stunning S1 Automatic.
“The S1 blends the rules of classical watch design into an avant-garde interpretation,” Galli said. “I made it as a tribute to the history of Timex as well as a look ahead to the chapters yet to be written.”
Arriving in a 38mm metal-injected moulded case, the stainless steel S1 38 Automatic is a welcomed change of pace for Timex. Naturally, it features an automatic movement, protected by a double dome anti-reflecting sapphire crystal that offers solid performance ina ll light conditions. Additionally, Galli has upped this model with a caliber Miyota 9039 tuned to 28800boh with 42 hours power reserve and a customised rotor. There is also a super luminova infill on the hands, with the final piece coming complete with a high durability synthetic rubber strap.
For Galli, the latest release is the culmination of decades of work, refined over years and solidified with success. It’s little wonder, he was happy to put his name to it.
“To me, Timex is different from any other brand. Timex has no competition,” Galli said. “It stands for independence, timeless beauty, quality and incredible value. Being able to sculpt the legacy of this iconic brand is truly a joy and an honour.”
The Timex Galli S1 Automatic launched on December 17 and is available in three colours – Inverness Green, Atlantic Blue and Iceland Stone Grey. The timepiece is priced at USD$450 (AUD$837).
