We get it, an engagement ring is a big purchase, and choosing the right one for your better half is not a decision to be made lightly. Here’s our answer to some engagement ring FAQs.
Tradition says you should spend 2 – 3 month's salary on an engagement ring. We say you can dispense with tradition on this particular front. Spend what you're comfortable spending. Do your research, and have a firm idea of the quality of the material and craftsmanship you want to invest in. Talk to your missus-to-be. Ask her what your expectations are. Keep in mind this is the first step of the rest of your lives together, starting off in a hole the shape of the giant rock you just bought may not be ideal. At the end of the day, you can't put a price on your relationship. Plus, you'll also soon have a wedding to pay for, and trust me, that ain't cheap.
There are a lot of factors that go into determining the quality—and therefore, the value—of a diamond. A carat is a unit of weight, and one of four criteria that determines a diamond's worth. (The others are cut, colour, and clarity; together they're known as the 4 Cs).So, while two diamonds next to one another may be the same size, their value could be vastly different. Plus, other factors like market dynamics and the origin of the diamond come into play. You've seen Blood Diamond, right? It's true, you don't have to use a diamond for your engagement ring. But diamonds (as well as gold for the band) are synonymous with engagement and wedding rings for a good reason. Gold doesn't tarnish, which is great for longevity and also an apt metaphor for your future marriage. And diamonds… well, diamonds are forever. They're also a girl's best friend, apparently.
