If you were to spend 180 years honing your craft, chances are you’d become rather good at it. The trouble is that the discipline needed to single-mindedly pursue such a passion for years—let alone decades—is one few of us can muster. And when you expand that timescale out to the best part of two centuries, well, we’re talking a level of dedication across multiple generations that’s impossible to fathom.
So it is with Penfolds. Established in 1844, Australia’s premier winemaker has managed to proudly stamp its name across three centuries of the viticultural arts. Now, the brand is celebrating its 180th anniversary and doing so as no one else can: introducing The Penfolds Collection 2024, a new 25-wine offering that sees the beloved label expand its scope while maintaining the singular devotion to world-beating wines that has made Penfolds synonymous with the humble grape’s highest calling.

A Global Collection
To be clear, when we say humble, we in no way mean to diminish the remarkable fruit behind each iconic Penfolds bottle. In fact, Penfolds has a time-honoured tradition of sourcing only the very best grapes, a mission that The Penfolds Collection 2024 takes beyond Australia’s own rich vineyards to the best regions in China, the US and France.
While we’ll do our best to deep-dive into each of these wines as and when the opportunity presents itself, for now, we’ve outlined a selection of highlights from the collection divided by region below.

Australia Release
At the core of The Penfolds Collection 2024 sits a selection of 18 Australian wines that showcase why our grapes occupy the most elite tier in the winemaking world. Of these, there are two undeniable highlights. The first is 2020 Grange, which undoubtedly stands centre stage thanks to its assured and distinctive flavour profile, while the second is the 2022 Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine celebrating its own 60th anniversary that’s as full-bodied as they come and has proven cellaring potential. No matter which drop you select from the Australian release, you’ll discover a winemaking masterclass you won’t soon forget.

US Release
The culmination of 20 years of Penfolds applying its expertise to the soils of California, this collection of four wines is such a strong offering we can’t pick a favourite from the bunch. Whether you choose the 2021 Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021 Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2021 Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz, or their new stablemate, the 2021 Howell Mountain Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, you’ll be delighted by the combination of Australian expertise and American grapes.

French Release
Boasting a pair of outstanding wines, this is the third release to spring from Penfolds’ partnership with Dourthe, one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious winemakers. Whether you’re drawn to the 2022 Penfolds II Cabernet Sauvignon—a blend of the 2022 Cabernet from Bordeaux and the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon from South Australian vineyards half a world away—or the 2021 FWT 585 Cabernet Sauvignon Petit Verdot Merlot, the combined strength of Australian and French winemaking will surely astound.

China Release
Rounding out the collection is the second release of 2022 CWT (Chinese Winemaking Trial) 521 Cabernet Sauvignon Marselan. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon from Shangri-La and Marselan from Ningxia, this experimental drop blends the structural framework of the Cabernet Sauvignon with the rich, generous palate of Marselan to superb effect.

A Work of Art
As if the 25 wines that make up The Penfolds Collection 2024 were not celebration enough, Penfolds is also releasing a commemorative Bin 180 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz 2021 in honour of its 180-year milestone. Available in 750mL, 1.5L, and 3L variations, Penfolds claims the wine combines Cabernet’s structure with the richness of Shiraz, resulting in an experience that embodies “balance, power, and beauty”. And global wine critics agree, already awarding three 99-point scores.
Further, Penfolds has partnered with South Australian artisan Andrew Bartlett to design a limited-edition art piece that will envelop the rare 3L jeroboam Bin 180 wines. Each will deploy wood panels painstakingly constructed from staves of Penfolds French oak barrels to represent 180 years of the label’s incredible legacy.
The Penfolds Bin 180 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz will be available from Thursday, 1 August in the aforementioned 750ml (RRP AUD$1,180), 1.5L (RRP AUD$3,500) and 3L (RRP AUD$18,000) formats. Only 180 magnums and 8 jeroboams will be made available globally.

A Milestone Worth Celebrating
As Australia’s most celebrated winemaker reaches its 180th anniversary, it’s hard not to feel a twinge of pride at such a monumental achievement. The passion and dedication required to reach this point cannot be overstated.
