Matt Moran is Launching a Flashy New Dining Destination at the Sydney Opera House

Just when you thought the beautiful harbourside city of Sydney couldn’t get any better, brace yourselves, the Sydney Opera House is set to welcome the House Canteen to its line-up of bars and restaurants this October. The next-door neighbour to the iconic Opera Bar, what you now may know as Opera Kitchen, the eatery, is undergoing a transformation.

The much-anticipated relaunch will be under Matt Moran and hospitality group Solotel as an all-day, canteen-inspired dining venue with panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. Other venues within Solotel resume include Aria, Barangaroo House, Golden Sheaf and Opera Bar, so you know what you’re in for is nothing short of exceptional. The best bit? Iconic Opera Bar is conveniently next door.

“It’s hard to beat this waterside location at the Opera House,” House Canteen co-owner Matt Moran said. “We’re thrilled to continue being part of such an iconic location for our city with House Canteen. It’s a relaxed and welcoming offering with plenty of crowd favourites on the menu.”

Wondering what to expect from the new dining spot? Start your day off with pastries, doughnuts and baked goods from Sydney’s best bakeries during breakfast hours, along with coffee from Single O served all day long.

When it comes to lunch and dinner, the new menu takes inspiration from Asian cuisines — think dumplings, rice paper rolls, sushi and (the real deal) KFC. The menu is seasonal, so you’ll never get bored. If you fancy a drink to accompany your meal, there is an extensive wine list showcasing the best of Australian producers alongside all your favourite beers and classic, as well as some not-so-classic, cocktails.

“Our harbourside dining venues are a distinct drawcard for locals and visitors, so we’re thrilled that Matt Moran and Solotel will reimagine the former Opera Kitchen space as the House Canteen,” Sydney Opera House chief customer officer Jade McKellar said/ “Their innovative concept will enhance the venue’s status as a destination restaurant and bar while continuing to offer our audiences and visitors a vibrant and diverse dining experience. Whether it’s a morning coffee, lunch with friends, a pre-theatre bite or late-night snack following a show, guests can enjoy a delicious new menu with the same welcoming atmosphere and, of course, with the same breathtaking views.”

House Canteen will open from Thursday 13 October every day of the week for all-day dining, with both dine-in and takeaway options available for visitors on-the-go. Bookings for the House Canteen are now open and can be made via the link below.
