Man of Many’s Staff Favourites – 9 April 2022

The long march towards the Easter long weekend is drawing to a close, meaning we’re only a brief week away from finally getting some rest. With tonnes of F1 action set to tie us over and the dust still settling on the bumper week that was Watches & Wonders 2022, we’re almost all worn out…almost. We’re still clocking in to dish out the latest in products, culture and style to anyone who will listen. Here’s Man of Many’s Staff Favourites for this week.

MANIAX Axe Throwing

Nick Hall – Editor-in-Chief

I’ve never really understood the obsession with Vikings. The weird horn-shaped hats, desire for pillaging and the need to drink ale from a flagon (seriously, just use a cup) never really piqued my interest, however, that all changed this week when I found myself thrust into the high-stakes world of axe-throwing. Venturing down to Marrickville for the opening of MAXIAX’s seventh studio, which just so happens to be the largest axe-throwing venue in the southern hemisphere, I arrived ready to have my perspective changed and mind blown. And indeed, I did. The monster 350-person axe throwing utopia and Viking-esque themed bar rocked my foundations to the core, dishing out hours’ worth of fun. I did not realise throwing an axe at a wall would be so entertaining and yet, here I am. Chuck in a couple of tinnies (post-axe-throw, of course) and you’ve got yourself a winning combination. Seriously, for all my preconceived notions, I will be back.

Man of Many Exclusive Westward Whiskey American Single Malt Barrel Selection

Scott Purcell – Co-Founder

The cat is out of the bag! You’ll be hearing me shout this from the rooftops for the next couple of weeks as it’s probably the coolest thing Frank and I have done since starting Man of Many nigh-on 10 years ago – Man of Many has released our very own whiskey. During lockdown last year, after a virtual tasting with the head distiller at Oregon-based distillery Westward, we chose a single select cast that we favoured the most to pour 300 limited edition bottles for our readers. We chose it mainly for the delicious dark chocolate notes on the nose and malt forward nuances on the palate but also because it was probably the most approachable and smooth of the whiskies we tried, despite being at a higher proof of 100 (or 50% ABV). We write about products all day, so being able to put our name to one is a very special feeling and something we’re incredibly proud of. If you’d like to pick yourself up a bottle of this special American single-malt, single-barrel, you can do so at the link below. We can’t wait for you to try this whiskey and as the tagline on the bottle says it’s “Best Shared With Mates”.

Peloton app

Peloton App

Frank Arthur – Co-Founder

We all know about the Peloton bike craze that peaked during the COVID lockdown, but there’s a lot more to the brand than the bikes and treadmills that they’re most renowned for. Limited floor space in urban homes and high equipment purchase costs are a couple of obvious customer acquisition hurdles for Peloton, so to broaden its offering Peloton has focused on expanding its app offering to appeal to a broader market. If you own little-to-no equipment, the Peloton app offers a wide range of programs which include strength, cardio, yoga, running, outdoor and more.

It’s clear that Peloton has put a lot of effort into delivering tailored solutions for each individual user. The app prompts the user to answer a number of questions to determine their fitness levels and fitness goals, and with this information, it presents recommendations from its library of follow-along classes. A 30-minute outdoor interval running session, 10-minute full-body stretch, 20-minute shadowboxing class or 10-minute bodyweight strength session are just a few examples of the many classes available. With a slick user interface, tracking of performance and achievements, as well as syncing with apps like Apple Health, Google Fit, Strava and more, the Peleton app is a great fitness app whether used to guide your entire fitness program or to supplement your existing regimen.

Severance on Apple TV+

I’m not really sure why Severance isn’t getting more media attention, cause it’s a really great show, twisted, but great. Basically, it’s about a group of people that have their memories surgically divided between work and their personal lives, meaning when at work, they have no idea who they are at home, whether they’re married, have kids, where they live etc and the same goes for when they’re home – they don’t know what they do at work or who they work with. With Adam Scott as the main character leading a team of office workers in a very bizarre and isolated setting, Severance is, in my opinion, an absolutely brilliant show. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen, it’s thrilling, mysterious, and intriguing with a lot of secrets and twists along the way. I’d give it a 9 out of 10.

Samsung bespoke jet

Samsung Bespoke Jet

Tim Fernandes – Senior Sales & Partnerships Manager

I’ve been using the Samsung Bespoke Jet, the world’s greatest cordless vacuum cleaner, for 2 weeks now and can’t talk more highly about how fantastic it is. Especially for cat hair. I really like that it comes with an “Integrated Clean Station” which acts as a charging dock, but also with the press of a button empties the dust container into its own separate bin, hidden within the dock itself. It’s packaged with a whole suite of convenient cleaning extras like heads for pet hair, cars, furniture and hard to reach spots with an adjustable length. What I most like about the Bespoke Jet is the Spray Spinning Sweeper, which comes with wet pads perfect for finishing my hardwood floors and tiles in the kitchen and bathroom. The battery life is great AND it comes with a second battery just in case, it’s super light (1.44kg), it’s quiet enough to not scare my cat and has a nifty LED Digital Display that provides you with all the information you need at a glance; Suction level settings, remaining battery, and error alerts like clogging, objects stuck in the brush, or missing filters, and provides a guide to help you fix the problem. If you’re in the market for a premium cordless vac, you won’t be disappointed.

Mambo surf de luxe

Mambo Surf De Luxe

Sam Mangioni – Journalist – Entertainment & Culture

In my past life, surfing was all I cared about. Shredding gnarly waves along the NSW coastline wasn’t just a passion; it was a lifestyle. And as someone who was so immersed in the culture, the clothes I wore were as important to me as the ocean itself. At the time, the brand we all revered was Mambo. Ahead of its time, Mambo was known for its subversive art, larrikin humour and social commentary that perfectly depicted our way of life. So today, I’m incredibly excited to announce the label is returning to its iconic roots with the new Mambo Surf De Luxe range. Working with OGs Reg Mombassa, Dan Mckay and rising talent like Chloe Kovska, they’ve produced an incredible collection featuring both new and heritage artwork. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a few pieces and was highly impressed by the design and their commitment to using fully sustainable and eco-friendly products. The Mambo Surf De Luxe range has reignited my passion for surfwear, and I think it will do the same for you.

Bar a 3

Bar Americano Residency

Clelia Niyikiza – Branded Content Assistant

You heard it right; family-owned Bacardi-Martini Australia (BMA) are teaming with Bondi’s iconic Icebergs Bar to bring Melbourne’s Bar Americano to Sydney for a special residency. I recently had the opportunity to visit the space and I have to say, I had a great time trying the ‘made to perfection’ cocktail list. While the classic Spice Americano was a crowd-pleaser, my personal favourite was the N. 8 Mimosa. Made with fermented ruby red grapefruit, house Grapefruitchello, Italian bitters, grey goose vodka, all charged with Doc prosecco, the fanciful drink was an absolute show-stopper

But while the drinks were incredible, the snacks, in my opinion, were something to remember. The Smoked Bacala & Yarra Valley Salmon Roe cruller was delicious enough to order seconds! For a pop-up, the new Bar Americano Residency ticks all the boxes. A remake of a famous bar isn’t always an easy thing to execute, but this 10-seat, limited-time event is perfectly suited to the iconic beachfront suburb. Couple that with a spate of Jazz music that transformed the night and you’ve got a must-visit night to remember. Get in while you can!

Baracuta g9

Baracuta G9

Rob Edwards – Branded Content Writer

The Baracuta G9 Harrington has long been a classic piece of menswear, epitomising Ivy League cool since it was first designed for golfers in the 1930s – the G stands for “Golf” – and then embraced by the mods in the ‘60s. Worn by a wide range of absolute icons over the years, from JFK and Steve McQueen to Elvis Presley and Paul Weller, the G9, with its unmistakable Fraser tartan lining, is the undeniable king of the Harringtons.

I’ve had numerous jackets that came close over the years – brands like Fred Perry and Polo Ralph Lauren have created their own Harringtons – but I’ve never had a G9, the original and the best. Having recently joined the really rather sharply dressed Man of Many team, I figured I’d better up my game. And what better way to do so than with a G9 in the classic Dark Red colourway?

Nanodry towel

Matador NanoDry Packable Towels

Jacob Osborn – Staff Writer

Matador’s NanoDry Packable Shower Towel and NanoDry Trek Towel are supremely lightweight and designed specifically for travel. Capable of absorbing 2.3 times their own weight in water, they each fit into a respective silicone case and take up about as much room as a smartphone. That makes them ideal for camping trips and other outdoor adventures, where every inch of space counts.

Having been recently upgraded, both towels are now sleeker than before and equipped with convenient buckle loops for hanging. The Shower Towel is also five inches longer than its previous iteration and all the more effective as a result. Their travel-friendly design makes standard towels seem like a downright burden by comparison. Don’t head into the wilderness without one.
