Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt has just paid USD$40 million (AU$57 million) for the historic D.L. James house known as Seaward that overlooks California’s breathtaking central coast. The actor is currently on a press tour for his latest film, Bullet Train, but that didn’t prevent him from adding to his property portfolio, buying the 1918 century-old home for what is believed to be the highest-priced home ever sold in the area. Must be nice, Brad.

The D.L. James House was designed by 20th-century architect Charles Sumner Greene. He designed the luxurious home on a piece of land owned by infamous author Daniel lewis James, who wrote Famous All Over Town, naming the property on the Carmel highlights after himself. Before the 58-year-old recently snapped it up off-market, it had been owned by Searock since 1999, a limited liability company tied to the late Chicago financier Joe Ritchie and his wife, Sharon Ritchie.
Located metres from the beach, the house boasts a wooden aesthetic and is built from locally quarried sandstone and granite. It has arched windows, with bricks individually chosen by Charles Greene, and a tiled Mediterranean-style roof. The Gamble House, an organisation dedicated to the architect’s work, says Mr Greene “built up the outer walls so they appear to be growing out of the cliffs”.
Photographer Alexander Vertikoff took exclusive snaps of the property in 1997 and recently told the Daily Mail, “When I photographed it the whole thing had been uninhabited for quite some time. It has been in a perpetual state of being finished for 50 years, it was difficult to tell what all of the rooms are. It’s not that big, and it’s awfully private. They just don’t make land like that anymore.”
Carmel-by-the-Sea first became popular with Hollywood heavyweights when Clint Eastwood became the town’s mayor in a landslide election in 1986. The 92-year-old still resides in the area to this day. The Carmel home of Golden Girls actress Betty White recently sold for USD$10.775 million, well over its USD$7.95 million asking price.
No stranger to the area, Brad Pitt already has a USD$5 million beach house in Goleta, California, which he purchased in 2000 while married to Jennifer Aniston.
