The James Brand’s $79 Abbey Knife is a Jack of All Trades

Sometimes you discover that products created for a specific purpose serve many other functions outside of that original intent equally well. The Abbey fixed blade knife from The James Brand is just such a product. Originally, the Abbey was designed to open vinyl records, but it didn’t take long to discover that this handsome little tool was more than capable to take on other duties.

The James Brand partnered with the vinyl subscription service Vinyl Me Please to create a tool that could be used to carefully cut open new records. The result was the Abbey—a simple design that has plenty of possibilities. The Abbey features a fixed blade made of stainless steel with a satin finish and is offered with a variety of inlays, most notably upcycled black vinyl LP record inlays. Each record yields 20 sets of scales, and the look is unique yet stylish.

If you prefer, you can choose the rosewood finish, which is a classic look for fixed blades. Or you can choose the adventurous side and opt for the mystery scale—a vinyl inlay that is guaranteed to be completely unique with no two ever being the same. It measures three inches in length and 0.6 inches in width with a 0.2 inch thickness. It weighs just 0.6 ounces, making it a light addition to your backpack or as an everyday carry item. It comes with a paracord lanyard and a sheath made of top grain, embossed leather.

Not only does this little blade make quick work of opening vinyls, you’ll also find it handy as a letter opener or for breaking down boxes. It’s so useful that you’ll want to keep it within arm’s reach for any of those tasks that pop up when a sharp blade would come in handy.

Vinyl record enthusiasts will want to lay claim to this diminutive knife for the exact purpose it was intended for—opening new records. But it’s easy to conceive of why others would be interested as well. The little blade is light, sturdy, and attractive. It’s useful for more functions than just its original intention. Plus, there are plenty of inlays to choose from to match your particular style. And finally, it’s priced very affordably—just USD$79. At that price, you can certainly find a use for the Abbey from The James Brand.
