15 Best James Bond Cars

From the iconic Aston Martin DB5 (aka the ‘James Bond car’) to the Lotus Espirit S1, we’re listing off the best 007 cars and taking you along for the ride. As you’re probably aware, classic automobiles and the Bond franchise have gone hand in hand since the earliest instalments. The association between these two respective worlds is so firmly established that there’s even a James Bond Lego car. Spoiler alert: the James Bond Lego car did not make our list.

Meanwhile, you might be wondering: which cars will appear in “No Time to Die?” According to early reports, the upcoming Bond film will feature a slew of incredible 007 cars, including no less than four Aston Martins (one of which is a Valhalla supercar). Then there’s the Land Rover Defender 2020 that was spotted on set a few months back. Suffice it to say, the new 007 flick won’t slouch in the automotive department…as if you didn’t already know that.

At the end of the day, cars are as integral to the franchise as watches and women. Whether we’re talking about James Bond BMWs or the James Bond “Spectre” car, the legendary superspy always rolls in quality and style. Throw in all those customised features—courtesy of Q team—and you have yourself one heck of an ongoing legacy. Without further delay, here are the best James Bond film cars.

Aston Martin DB5

Film: Goldfinger

Film: Thunderball
Year of Release: 1965
Actor who played James Bond: Sean Connery

Film: Goldeneye
Year of Release: 1995
Actor who played James Bond: Pierce Brosnan

Film: Tomorrow Never Dies
Year of Release: 1997
Actor who played James Bond: Pierce Brosnan

Film: Casino Royale
Year of Release: 2006

Film: Skyfall
Year of Release: 2012
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

Film: No Time to Die
Year of Release: 2020
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

While technically not the first Bond car (Sean Connery drove a Sunbeam Alpine Series II in “Dr. No”), the Aston Martin DB5 is easily the most quintessential. Starting with “Goldfinger,” this luxury GT has been more synonymous with the 007 franchise than any other car. Expanding upon Ian Fleming’s source material, it almost always comes decked out with weaponry and gadgetry, including hidden guns, rotating plates, and ejector seats. To think, Aston Martin was initially reluctant to loan the film a development prototype. Wiser minds prevailed and a downright classic partnership was born.

Lotus Espirit S1

Film: The Spy Who Loved Me
Year of Release: 1977
Actor who played James Bond: Roger Moore

After engaging in a perilous car chase on land, the Lotus Espirit S1 plunges underwater and transforms into a submarine, only to engage in yet another perilous chase. If that doesn’t make it one of the best 007 cars, we don’t know what does. Roger Moore was behind the wheel with a gorgeous Bond girl by his side.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage

Film: The Living Daylights
Year of Release: 1987
Actor who played James Bond: Timothy Dalton

Film: No Time to Die
Year of Release: 2020
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

When Timothy Dalton stepped into the shoes of Agent 007, Aston Martin (eagerly) returned to the fold after a relatively long hiatus. The resulting car was a tricked out V8 Vantage Volante, which was the last to draw upon the original DBS design. It came loaded to the gills with choice weapons, including a rocket afterburner, hidden missiles, and hubcap lasers. Here’s hoping it packs the same punch in “No Time to Die.”

BMW 750iL

Film: Tomorrow Never Dies
Year of Release: 1997
Actor who played James Bond: Pierce Brosnan

A bigger car meant more gadgets and more weapons for Agent 007, who was all too happy to oblige. That car was a BMW 750iL and Bond could retrieve it by way of a mobile device, which seems as plausible now as it did implausible back then. This was one of five James Bond BMWs featured throughout the film series.

Mercury Cougar XR-7

Film: On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Year of Release: 1969
Actor who played James Bond: George Lazenby

In the pre-title sequence, George Lazenby’s Bond hops into a DBS and chases down his future wife, Tracy di Vincenzo. She’s driving a classic red Mercury Cougar convertible, which might very well outshine Bond’s classic Aston Martin. At the very least, it makes for a refreshing and largely gimmick-free alternative.

Lotus Esprit Turbo

Film: For Your Eyes Only
Year of Release: 1981
Actor who played James Bond: Roger Moore

Presented in two variations—one white and one bronze—the Lotus Espirit Turbo doesn’t serve much of a function in this early 1980s instalment. Nevertheless, it looks great and performs well and that alone is enough to rank it among the best James Bond film cars.

Toyota 2000GT Roadster

Film: You Only Live Twice
Year of Release: 1967
Actor who played James Bond: Sean Connery

To accommodate Bond’s (i.e. Connery’s) height, Toyota converted two sports coupes into 2000GT Roadster convertibles in just two weeks time. Behind the steering wheel is Japanese intelligence agent Aki, who demonstrates some impressive skills while driving through the streets of Tokyo.

Ford Mustang Mach 1

Film: Diamonds are Forever
Year of Release: 1971
Actor who played James Bond: Sean Connery

Diamonds are forever and so are Ford Mustangs. With Tiffany Case riding shotgun, Bond drives a revised Mach 1 through downtown Las Vegas, the police hot on their tail. Famously, he tilts the car onto its passenger side wheels while squeezing through an alleyway…or was it his driver’s side wheels? Actually, it was both (due to a continuity error).

BMW Z8

Film: The World is Not Enough
Year of Release: 1999
Actor who played James Bond: Pierce Brosnan

Fans of James Bond BMWs got their money’s worth when they sat down for this instalment, which featured a tricked-out Z8. The last car to be customised by the original Q team, it was tragically sliced in two by a helicopter blade.

Aston Martin DBS V12

Film: Casino Royale
Year of Release: 2006
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

Film: Quantum of Solace
Year of Release: 2008
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

Striking a perfect balance between discretion and luxury, the Aston Martin DBS V12 was Bond’s fastest to date and easily one of the best 007 cars. In “Casino Royale,” he famously flips it seven times after swerving to avoid Vesper Lynd. The model returns for “Quantum of Solace,” where it partakes in a high-speed chase through Italy’s Lake Garda. And since we didn’t include the James Bond “Spectre” car on our list, let’s give a quick shout-out to the custom-made Aston Martin DB10!

Aston Martin DBS Superleggera

Film: No Time to Die
Year of Release: 2020
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

There’s no time to die in the upcoming Bond film, but let’s hope there’s plenty of time to drive the wonderful Superleggera. It’s one of a whopping four Aston Martins to reportedly appear in the film. We can’t wait!

Aston Martin Valhalla

Film: No Time to Die
Year of Release: 2020
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

Speaking of awesome Aston Martins in “No Time to Die,” keep your eyes peeled for a Valhalla supercar. We know we will.

Sunbeam Alpine Series II

Film: Dr. No
Year of Release: 1962
Actor who played James Bond: Sean Connery

Let’s give it up for this Sunbeam Alpine Roadster, i.e. the first official 007 car. What it lacked in weaponry, it made up for in sheer visual splendour.

Citroen 2CV

Film: For Your Eyes Only
Year of Release: 1981
Actor who played James Bond: Roger Moore

According to legend, the Citroen 2CV generated anywhere from 9 to 29 hp, and was so slow that the film crew employed movie magic to make it seem faster. Sometimes you have to go with an underdog, which is why it makes our list of the best 007 cars.

Land Rover Defender

Film: No Time to Die
Year of Release: 2020
Actor who played James Bond: Daniel Craig

This Land Rover Defender actually leaked out before the car was even announced on the set of the James Bond franchise’s 25th film release, No Time to Die.
