2022 BMW X5 Black Vermilion Edition is a Baller
BMW has unveiled the 2022 X5 Black Vermilion Edition, its latest special release SUV. Revamping the base model xDrive40i into a blacked-out luxury SUV, BMW has leaned into the controversy, wrapping the contentious and now-iconic kidney grille in luxe red. While it won’t be for everyone, the new X5 Black Vermilion is unmistakably head-turning.

In terms of design, the new X5 Black Vermilion Edition is finished in Frozen Black Metallic paint, highlighted by the red vertical-slat kidney grilles. As a nod to the classics, BMW has also incorporated adaptive LED headlights that have been darkened to match the blacked-out aesthetic.
Under the hood, it’s more of the same. The Black Vermilion Edition has the same base model spec as the normal BMW X5 XDriver40i – 335-hp 3.0-litre I-6 and AWD, not that it’s anything to complain about. The brake calipers are the only exception. This refresh sees the calipers upgraded to M Sport spec, with black powder-coated wheels keeping them partially hidden. Vermilion Editions also come with a M Sport exhaust (that’s typically not available on the xDrive 40i), adaptive M suspension, and the M Sport bumpers.

Inside, the 2022 X5 Black Vermilion Edition takes the concept of the cockpit to the extreme. Built to resemble a luxury spacecraft, everything from the seats to the roof liner have been trimmed in black Merino leather or black Alcantara.
You’ll find some red piping on the seats and dash, alongside an ultra-luxe crystal shift lever round out the look. The glass controls for the gear selector, start/stop button, and drive mode selector also come as standard.

But if there is one thing that BMW knows well it’s exlcusivity. The German automotive icon has confirmed that only 350 of the new special editions will be made available in the US, with production set to run from September to November. The 2022 BMW X5 Black Vermilion Edition is available to order now starting at USD$83,295.
