Bonny All Rounder Quilt Review: The 800-Fill Down Doona That Promises Every Season

The doona is the one piece of bedding you touch every single night yet never really think about. That is, until you’re sweating through the summer months or reaching for another doona in winter. Australian brand Bonny reckons it has solved that issue with the All Rounder Quilt. One 90 per cent down doona built to keep you warm in winter and cool in summer, sold direct without the retail markup because it’s direct-to-consumer.

So, we wanted to put it to the test.

This Bonny All Rounder Quilt review is based on two weeks of cold Sydney winter nights under the Super King that Bonny sent us to test. The short version: it’s light, it’s evenly filled, and it keeps you warm without cooking you. It replaced a doona that had quietly stopped doing its job and the difference was obvious within a night. The summer half of the all-seasons claim is the part we can’t answer just yet, but I’ve been explicit below about where that leaves the verdict.

What This Review Covers (and What It Doesn’t)

Bonny sells the All Rounder on a two-part promise: warm in winter, cool in summer. We’ve tested one half of it. Everything here comes from two weeks of continuous use through a cold Sydney winter, in the Super King size, on a king bed. That covers the warmth claim, the build, the loft and the day-to-day practicality.

What it doesn’t cover is summer. A doona that handles cold nights tells you nothing about how it behaves in February humidity, and we’re not going to guess. We’ll be sleeping under it through summer and adding a second verdict then. Until that happens, treat every judgement below as a winter judgement.

First Impressions

Bonny ships plastic-free, in FSC-certified cardboard, with the doona tucked inside a reusable cotton storage bag.

It reads premium before you’ve unfolded it. The doona comes out of a reusable cotton bag rather than the vacuum-sealed plastic brick most bedding arrives in, and the whole presentation is closer to a piece of furniture than a bedding purchase.

One thing worth knowing: it doesn’t arrive at full loft. Bonny’s advice is to let it breathe for around five days, over which the down opens up and fills out. That proved accurate. Night one is not this doona at its best, so if you unpack it and suspect you’ve been undersold, give it a week before questioning if you need to make a call.

Design, Materials and Build

Here’s what you’re actually getting, and where the money goes:

• Fill: 90 per cent ethically-sourced down, 10 per cent feather fibres, at 800+ fill power. Bonny calls fill power “the single most important measurement” for warmth-to-weight, and 800+ sits in genuine premium territory.
• Down standard: RDS certified, meaning non-live-plucked and sourced from the food industry, and cleaned with bluesign-approved detergents, so it’s hypoallergenic.
• Casing: ultra-soft 400 thread count, 100 per cent cotton, chosen for breathability as much as softness.
• Construction: the signature Bonny “Wave” stitching holds the down evenly so it doesn’t migrate into cold spots, and doubles as a cue for which way the doona sits in the cover. Double-stitched sealed edges stop feather escape.
• Thoughtful touches: corner loops to anchor it to compatible sheets, plus the cotton storage bag.

It translates. The thing that registers first is how little it weighs for how much doona there is. It’s fluffy and light in the hand, and it drapes over the bed rather than sitting on top of it like a slab.

The fill is genuinely even. Two weeks in there are no thin patches and no corners that have gone flat, which is exactly what the Wave stitching is there to prevent, and what’s often hard to find in other doonas.

The All-Season Claim: How It Actually Sleeps

This is the whole pitch, so it’s the whole review. The All Rounder uses the same 800+ fill power as Bonny’s dedicated Winter doona but with roughly a third less down, so it’s lighter and less insulating, the idea being it’s warm enough for cold nights without cooking you in summer.

We came to it from an old doona that had yellowed and thinned to the point where it barely kept me warm. This is the bar this doona had to clear, and it cleared it on the first properly cold night.

Across a fortnight of cold Sydney winter evenings, it has been warm but not too warm. Plenty of winter doonas solve cold by being heavy, and you pay for it at 3am with a leg hanging out the side. This one holds heat without that smothering weight.

The single biggest difference, though, wasn’t the down at all. We deliberately went for a Super King doona on a king bed, and it changed the game. The extra width leaves enough overhang on both sides that nobody drags it across in their sleep, so the nightly tug of war simply stops happening. At AUD$699 for the Super King against $599 for the King, that’s $100 to make the problem disappear, and it’s the best hundred dollars anywhere in this review.

Worth saying that a doona is only one way to attack bedroom temperature. If you’d rather solve it at the mattress, that’s a different and considerably more expensive approach, and we’ve reviewed the leading version of it: the Eight Sleep Pod 5.

Living With It: Care and Practicality

It’s machine washable cold with a mild detergent and an extra rinse, tumble dry low, no dry cleaning. Bonny recommends professional laundering only if it’s too big to move freely in your machine.

The detail I didn’t expect to care about is the corner loops. Every doona cover we’ve owned has eventually ended up with the quilt bunched down one end, and the loops let you tie it into the corners of the cover so it stays where you put it. Two weeks in, it hasn’t shifted once. It’s a small thing that fixes a genuinely annoying one, and it’s the feature I’d miss most going back.

Who It’s For (and Who It Isn’t)

Buy it if the doona you’re on is past its prime and you want the upgrade to be obvious from the first week. Buy it if you run warm and have been swapping between a summer and a winter doona to cope. And buy it a size up from your bed if you share it, because that’s where most of the value landed for us.

Skip it if you’re a genuinely cold sleeper chasing maximum warmth, because Bonny’s dedicated Winter doona carries around a third more down and is the better tool for that job. Skip it if you avoid animal products, because this is down. And if you need a verified summer answer before you spend, wait for our update.

Nothing about it has actually annoyed us across two weeks, so rather than manufacture a gripe, here’s what to know before you buy, and which of it we hit ourselves.

Man of Many’s Verdict

On the winter half of its promise, the All Rounder delivers. It’s light, it’s evenly filled, it holds heat without weight, and coming off a tired doona the upgrade was immediate. A fortnight in, it has made a bigger difference to how we sleep than anything else we’ve changed in the bedroom this year.

On what we can judge, it’s an easy recommendation, and the sizing advice is the part I’d press hardest: go a size up from your bed. We’ll add a summer verdict when we’ve earned it rather than guess at one now.
