How to Wear Men’s Graphic Tees Without Looking Like a Teenager

To settle the debate on how to wear graphic tees without looking like you’re skipping school, we chatted with stylist Charlie Rincón. He shared his expert advice on fit, styling, and the biggest mistakes men make when reaching for a graphic shirt.

Graphic Tees, And The Difference Between “Teenager” and “Styled”

The number one thing that separates an elevated graphic tee from the rest ultimately comes down to the subject matter. A graphic tee shouldn’t just be a random design you picked up on sale. It needs to say something about you.

“The content of the graphic is everything,” Rincón explains.

“A graphic tee should convey a message or serve as an indication of identity.”

If you’re going to wear a graphic tee, make sure it expresses a part of you. Tell the world who your favourite music artist is, or make a statement about something you believe in. Rincón points to Conner Ives’ Protect the Dolls or Campillo’s El Golfo de México t-shirts as prime examples.

As Rincón puts it, “The man who wears a Gucci monogram print is not the same who wears a Dries Van Noten print.”

Nailing the Men’s Graphic T-Shirt Fit

Fit is essential in menswear, and graphic t-shirts are no exception. The relaxed and oversized trend has dominated streetwear for a while now, but when it comes to elevating a graphic tee, proportion is key. 

“For the most part, it should be well fitted, or alternatively a slight boxy fit if you are not a fan of a slim fit,” Rincón advises.

“I love a slight crop, hitting right at or below the belt line, because it makes the legs look longer. Once you enter oversized territory, it starts to look too youthful or thrifty.”

If your shirt is too tight, it looks uncomfortable. If it’s too long or baggy, it looks sloppy. Aim for a cut that lightly hugs your shoulders and chest while falling straight down the torso. 

To Tuck or Not to Tuck Your Graphic T-Shirt?

The tuck is a long-used styling tool that instantly changes the vibe of a t-shirt. Here’s Rincón’s cheat sheet for managing your hemline.

“If the goal is to look more sophisticated, always layer over,” says Rincón. “Go for a solid jacket, denim, leather, or a blazer, to tone down the print.”

A blazer or a high-quality leather jacket acts as a frame and creates a high-low mix that feels incredibly modern.

If you prefer to layer under your tee, proceed with caution to avoid looking like an extra in a 2000s skate video. 

“The goal is to only hint at a layer below,” Rincón warns.

“A tank top with a contrasting colour peeking through the neckline is a very subtle but effective way to layer without looking Y2K.”

Getting the Details Right, Including Fabric, Collar & Base Colour

Beyond the graphic itself, the physical t-shirt choice can make or break the look. Flimsy, ultra-light jersey cotton tends to cling and sag under tailored jackets. Look for mid-to-heavyweight cotton (around 200–240 GSM) with a dense, structured crew neck collar that lays flat against your collarbone.

Base colour is also important. While bright neon or primary-coloured tees scream high school PE, neutral tones like washed black, vintage white, cream, navy, and muted olive are infinitely easier to layer and anchor with denim jeans or chinos.

• The Base: A standard or slightly fitted graphic tee (tucked or French tucked).
