$2,000 Samsung 34-inch Odyssey OLED G8 Curved Gaming Monitor Doesn’t Play Fair

Get ready for the glory of OLED gaming thanks to Samsung and the launch of their well-endowed 34-inch Odyssey OLED G8 curved gaming monitor with Quantum Dot Technology. Gamers will experience an ultra-wide, 21:9 aspect ratio QHD resolution (3,440 x 1,440) display with a 1800R curvature, a 0.03ms response time and 175Hz refresh rate, 100 per cent colour volume, and DCI-99.3 per cent colour gamut. And round back, you’ll find Micro HDMI (2.1), Mini DP (1.4), and plenty of USB-C ports for connecting all your gaming peripherals.

But be warned. Even with the bonus Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB worth AUD$389 for customers who pre-order from February 16 to March 5, 2023, this behemoth of a gaming monitor is AUD$1,999, which is about the same price as the entry-level Samsung S23 Ultra (8GB/256GB). Whoa.

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G8 offers high-speed gameplay in an ultra-slim form factor with a gorgeous metal frame construction. At its thinnest, the OLED G8 measures a stick-thin 3.9mm, which makes us wonder how they crammed so much OLED gaming goodness inside the 2022 Honoree in the CES Innovation Awards.

As for the rest of the package, the Odyssey OLED G8 includes a VESA-standard ergonomic stand that can swivel, tilt, and adjust to the optimal height for gaming or content consumption. Speaking of content, the OLED G8 goes beyond gaming nirvana to offer players “a complete entertainment hub with the ability to stream content through Samsung’s Smart Hub” that doesn’t require a PC or mobile device to access. The Smart Hub also means your OLED G8 is essentially a command centre for your voice assistants. That is if you use Bixby or Alexa. Sorry Google and Siri, Samsung says you’re not allowed.

Furthermore, thanks to Samsung TV Plus, viewers can experience free live entertainment without downloading or sign-up. Customers can connect wirelessly to a Windows or Mac PC, mirror their screen via Samsung DeX or AirPlay 2, or access Microsoft 365 cloud services to work from home.

But back to the gaming. Samsung is hailing the capabilities of the Odyssey OLED G8 as a genuine player advantage. The monitor is further boosted by AMD FreeSync Premium for seamless gameplay, in addition to its scorching 0.03ms response time and 175Hz refresh rate. As a result, players now have lightning-quick response times and real-world precision in various gaming scenarios. No wonder Samsungs tagline for the OLED G8 is “don’t play fair”.

Moreover, the sophisticated Neo Quantum Processor evaluates and optimises every frame on the OLED display to improve image quality. Colours, hues, and contrast work together to provide a bright and brilliant image no matter what you consume. And with DisplayHDR True Black 400, pixel light bleed will be a thing of the past, with only true black and dark colours remaining.

What’s incredible is that Samsung can achieve this display output via just one USB-C cable. Or as Samsung calls it, “single connection architecture. The Odyssey OLED G8’s display features an improved version of the Odyssey portfolio’s well-known CoreSync & Core Lighting+ for enhanced visual immersion. Its innovative lighting technology, found on the back of the monitor, complements the colours on-screen, bringing material to life with bright and vibrant hues that create more memorable, immersive experiences.

Experiences that can be calibrated on the fly thanks to the Game Bar, which includes the status of the most important settings such as FPS or HDR. Modify response time, switch screen ratio and adjust the game picture mode without ever having to quit the game or pause the movie. Moreover, anytime you turn on a new device, Auto Source Switch+ will automatically switch to the new source without pressing a button. Talk about convenience!

Although the Odyssey OLED G8 is the flagship gaming monitor down under, it recently gained an older brother in the form of the newly launched Odyssey G6, arriving ahead of the Odyssey OLED G9 and Odyssey Neo G9 gaming monitors unveiled at CES 2023, coming later this year. With “Odyssey innovation” continuing throughout 2023, Samsung will expand the display and functionality options available to gamers in its 2023 Odyssey monitor lineup to “exceed consumer expectations and enable gamers to work, watch, and live in style.”

It’s a move the company is basing on revealing insights that although monitors are “commonplace at home, few monitor owners are completely satisfied with their current device.” The research, which Nature Research conducted from March 2021 with 2000 Australians aged 18-60 years, revealed: “a mere one in four Australians rate their current monitor’s refresh rates and response times as ‘very good’, while just over a quarter of Australians say they are satisfied with the contrast and colour vibrancy available on their current displays.”

Participants also suggested a curved screen with improved audio capabilities would help “improve ergonomics and reduce eye strain” and make content consumption and gaming more immersive. If this sounds like you and you’re willing to spend big on your new monitor, the Odyssey OLED G8 will be available in Australia in March 2023 for AUD$1,999 through certain gaming resellers and the Samsung Internet Store.
