If you are looking to spice up your sex life, you may have considered introducing a cock ring to your sexual activities, but the age-old question remains: how exactly do you use one? In this article, you’ll find the beginner basics of the cock ring, enough to set you up and let you do the rest.

What is a Cock Ring?

A cock ring is a ring-shaped sex toy that goes around the shaft (or shaft and balls) of the male genitals to apply pressure. This pressure is pleasing to some people, as it can make erections feel harder, with the added pressure and constriction also enhancing the sensitivity of the penis.

How to Use a Cock Ring

If we’ve got you hooked (or you’ve skipped through to this point, welcome), here are our beginners’ tips to using a cock ring.

1. Start with Something Simple

Cock rings can come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. Stainless steel or metal rings can add a cold sensation to your sexual experience, but we wouldn’t recommend these to beginners. For your first experience, we recommend a silicone ring. This flexible and easy-to-clean option makes the cock ring easier to take on and off if you’re not enjoying yourself, as well as easier to clean up afterwards if you are enjoying yourself. Their flexible and stretchy nature should also keep you secure, so it doesn’t fall off with a simple shake.

We also recommend starting with the standard cock ring. A lot of cock rings and sex toys can provide extra stimulation, from vibrations to pulsations. You can certainly introduce these added features in the future, or with a partner using the Lelo Tor 2, a cock ring that provides pleasure for two.

2. Lube Up

As with anything related to sex, sex toys, and masturbation, always use lubrication. Before sliding on your cock ring, apply a few drops of lube to the inner ring and your shaft if necessary. This will allow for an easy, painless application of the cock ring.

There are different options for lube, and if you’re using a silicone ring, then you’ll want to avoid silicone lube. Confusing as it is, silicone lube can damage silicone sex toys, making them corrode over time. If you’re using condoms, avoid oil-based lubes, as these can tear the latex. For a lube that fits all, we recommend a water-based lube to keep your sex toys in better condition for longer.

3. Place the Ring On Before You Get Going

When sliding on the ring, do it with a flaccid or semi-erect penis, and grow into it. If the cock ring is tight (which it should be to apply pressure), you’ll have trouble getting it onto an erect penis. From here, you can decide if you want the sex toy around your shaft or shaft and balls. Either option is perfectly acceptable, and it’s totally up to you. Your penis, your rules. You’re looking for a pleasant, tight feeling without pain. If it hurts, it may not be right for your size.

4. Don’t Leave It On For Too Long

Like with any part of the body, restricting blood flow is a big no-no. Doing so can cause pain and even tissue damage, so remember to take regular breaks, and do not use the sex toy for more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Taking off the cock ring should be easier than getting it on, and be sure to use lube to simplify the whole process.

5. Have Fun

Finally, the most important part of using a cock ring is to enjoy using it. If you’re not into it, it’s okay to take a break. Pay close attention to what sensations feel best, and from there, you can take your sex drive into top gear!
