When you commission a Rolls-Royce, you become not only the owner of one of the finest cars on the planet but also part of an extended family. The brand cares about its clients more than any other car brand on earth, and this not only gives them the edge when it comes to releasing new motor cars, such as the Black Badge Spectre, but also physical items for the home, such as this new ceramic-coated aluminium and leather-clad Rolls-Royce Chess Set.
“We are in the privileged position of knowing our clients personally,” said Nick Abrams, Accessories Designer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, on the release of the Rolls-Royce Chess Set. “These relationships – and the unique insights they provide into our clients’ worlds, tastes, and preferences – inform everything we do at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.”
“Knowing that many clients enjoy chess — often at an extremely high level — we were inspired to create our own Chess Set as a natural evolution of the sense of hosting and occasion that defines the Rolls-Royce experience. Incorporating materials and the meticulous craft techniques our clients know and love from their motor car, the Chess Set is a discreet, beautiful, and authentic extension of our brand into their homes. It serves as a contemporary work of art in its own right, as well as a practical, playable game.”

The Rolls-Royce Chess Set, which is entirely handcrafted, reflects the same craftsmanship and materials used in the marque’s motor cars. It starts with the leather-clad base that rises gently from the centre, referencing the waft lines of the vehicles, and then extends to the playing board, which opens in a smooth, single theatrical motion to reveal a leather-lined holder that slowly elevates and presents the magnetically held pieces – a movement that seeks to replicate the coach doors opening on a Rolls-Royce.
When you talk about Rolls-Royce, it’s hard to wrap your head around the details of the materials they use. The leather in the vehicles is often sourced from cows living at high altitudes to avoid punctures in the hide from mosquito bites. They’re also found in fields where the hides wouldn’t be nicked by rocks or fences. It’s this level of detail that’s been replicated in the chess set. The design team experimented with six different types of magnets to “identify the optimal strength that secures the pieces yet allows them to float effortlessly across the board.”
It continues to the queen, when a piece is promoted, a hidden drawer on each side of the board opens with a light touch and contains an additional queen to take the place of the promoted piece.

It’s all in the details, and beyond the polished edges, perfectly magnetised pieces, and the hidden queen, the infamous Spirit of Ecstasy emblem is discreetly affixed to the front and back of the Chess Set, signifying its provenance.
Beyond this, the aluminium grid of the board is machine milled, then further refined by hand to achieve the precise definition of the corners, the veneer squares are laser cut and then precisely placed on the board by hand, and each piece is crafted from the same log to achieve a consistent pattern in the natural grain, ensuring the wood will age uniformly over the years.
Like your own Rolls-Royce, the playing board is available in a choice of veneers. High-gloss finishes include Blackwood with Ceramic White and Macassar Ebony with Royal Walnut. Meanwhile, Open Pore veneer treatments are available in Smoked Eucalyptus with Paldao and Obsidian Ayous with Blackwood. You can then choose from 13 Rolls-Royce leather colours — Cashmere Grey, Phoenix Red, Charles Blue, Forge Yellow, Iceland Moss, Scivaro Grey, Arctic White, Havana, Tailored Purple, Mandarin, Peony Pink, Black, and Lime Green.
No price has been revealed for the Rolls-Royce Chess Set, but when you consider the Cellarette whisky and cigar chest was priced at USD$61,000, expect to pay a pretty penny for this one. If you’re interested, the Rolls-Royce Chess Set is now available for commission in Rolls-Royce showrooms and Private Office boutiques.
