Holy Cowboy, Red Dead Redemption 3 is in the Works

After what felt like an interminable wait, Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has officially confirmed the development of Red Dead Redemption 3, the next title in the beloved Wild West action-adventure franchise. The announcement came directly from Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, during an interview at the Jefferies Virtual Global Interactive Entertainment Conference. During the conversation, Zelnick expressed his sentiments regarding the potential longevity of entertainment franchises like Red Dead Redemption and even compared it with the likes of James Bond.

Zelnick remarked, “If it’s really, really great, it will keep going. I don’t know if you saw it, I just saw the new Bond film, that was great. You would like every franchise to be James Bond. There are precious few entertainment franchises of any sort that fall into that category, but they do exist. And I think GTA is one of them, I think Red Dead is one of them, NBA is obviously one of them because the game will continue to exist.”

Adding to the mounting anticipation, a prominent pop culture leaker, going by the name @MyTimeToShineHello, recently took to Twitter to share a cover art image featuring Red Dead Redemption and proclaiming, with a simple and direct statement, “Red Dead Redemption 3 is officially in the works!”

But, as is often the case with Rockstar Games, it’s a safe bet that we won’t be getting any substantial updates anytime soon. Considering that the developer is currently devoting significant resources to the development of GTA 6, it’s reasonable to assume that Red Dead Redemption 3 may not be receiving the bulk of the resources at this time. As a result, details about the game, including potential storylines and settings, are still up in the air.

During the same conference, Take-Two chief Zelnick stressed the importance of taking the time to create something exceptional. He commented, “The time it takes to create something phenomenal requires us to be thoughtful and willing to rest the titles, so it becomes a special event.” The Western action-adventure gaming franchise kicked off in 2004 with the release of Red Dead Revolver, setting the stage for what would become an iconic journey.

However, it wasn’t until 2010 that the series achieved true greatness with Red Dead Redemption, captivating players with its immersive world and complex yet compelling storytelling. Fast forward to 2018, and the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 not only continued the series but took it to new heights, cementing its status as one of the gaming industry’s all-time classics.

As for when we can expect Red Dead Redemption 3 to hit the shelves, well, it’s a bit of a waiting game. Typically, Rockstar has maintained an eight-year gap between franchise installments, but this time around, it might be even longer. The primary reason is Rockstar’s current focus on bringing GTA 6 to fruition, which could potentially be released next year or so. Given the massive scale and ambition of both these projects, handling them simultaneously is an enormous challenge. Therefore, it’s quite plausible that Red Dead Redemption 3 won’t make its way to us until around 2030.
