Nintendo is Reportedly Remastering Your Favourite Mario Games for Super Mario’s 35th Anniversary

Based on what we’ve seen so far, 2020 probably isn’t the year for a milestone birthday; but that isn’t stopping Nintendo. The gaming giant’s flagship series, Super Mario is turning 35 this year and Nintendo reportedly has huge plans for the moustached, Italian plumber’s birthday. According to reports, Nintendo is reintroducing a host of back-catalogue games for Nintendo Switch, perfect for keeping the isolation blues away.

Video Games Chronicle was the first to report the birthday celebration, revealing that Nintendo had originally planned to focus on the Super Mario anniversary at the now-cancelled E3 Expo in June. Instead, Nintendo is opting to go ahead with the promotion, albeit in a slightly different way. A direct-style event is likely to be on the cards; with reports suggesting a Paper Mario game, the upcoming Mario film, and Universal Studios’ Super Nintendo World theme park are all set to be unveiled. If that is the case, however, Nintendo isn’t letting much get out. “We have nothing to announce on that topic,” a Nintendo spokesperson said in a note provided to GamesBeat.

But the rumours aren’t slowing down. Sources close to VentureBeat said the Super Mario remasters are likely to include Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and then Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It’s possible the older 3D Mario games could come in a single compilation, but based on the previous Zelda remasters, there’s a better chance Nintendo will release them individually.

Whatever Nintendo plans to do for our favourite plumber’s birthday, it better get cracking. The COVID-19 pandemic has driven demand for the Nintendo Switch to an all-time high, pushing the price above $450USD, and that’s only if you can get your hands on one. Retailers across the US and UK have reportedly sold out of the console, thanks mainly to the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The latest in the series, New Horizons sold more copies in its first week on sale than the launch sales of all previous Animal Crossing games combined, including spinoffs. In fact, New Horizons is now the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game in history. With all the hype surrounding Animal Crossing, it would take a monster effort for any Nintendo Switch game to top it, and we can think of only one character with the power to do it.

Luckily for us, he’s got a birthday coming up.
