After 25 years of building a galaxy far, far away brick by brick, LEGO and Star Wars are commemorating their partnership with a couple of exclusive anniversary edition sets, including an adorable yet detailed 1,050-piece R2-D2 (75379) building set that looks like a great addition of anyone’s Star Wars LEGO collection. Instead of a large-scale build, LEGO has opted for a more compact design, measuring 38.2cm tall, 26.2cm wide and 9.4cm deep. The legendary droid-building set also includes Darth Malak, a popular (but relatively old) character from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, an unexpected addition that fans of the franchise are sure to appreciate.
This new, slightly more affordable R2-D2 LEGO set is quite exciting, offering a surprising amount of detail and stuff for the price. Once built, the iconic R2-D2 droid stands over 9 inches tall and features swappable arms, a scope, a 360-degree rotating head, a detachable third leg for mobility, an attachable periscope and other attachable tools. Additionally, the set even includes various Star Wars Legends content, presented on a decorative display stand showcasing the 25th-anniversary logo as well as a mini version of the iconic droid.

As per LEGO, “This playful buildable display toy model for boys and girls ages 10 and up is packed with authentic features so they can play out classic moments and original fantasy stories. Features include R2-D2’s 360-degree rotating head, an attachable third leg, attachable periscope and attachable tools. To create an eye-catching Star Wars room décor display, this collectible toy building set also features an R2-D2 LEGO droid figure, a special LEGO Star Wars 25th Anniversary Minifigure of Darth Malak with a lightsaber and display stand, plus an R2-D2 information plaque.”
However, the star of the show in this set is none other than a mini Darth Malak, straight out of Bioware’s Knights of the Old Republic. It’s a bit unexpected, but honestly, it’s pretty awesome. Additionally, the set also features a UCS display plaque with an R2-D2 and a stand adorned with the LEGO Star Wars 25th-anniversary logo for the Darth Malak LEGO minifigure.
Talking a bit about the partnership, Mike Ilacqua, head of product at LEGO, said, “Creativity and imagination are at the heart of LEGO Star Wars and it has inspired generations of fans to explore the Star Wars galaxy through LEGO building, video games, and humorous storytelling.”
He further went on to add, “It has been a dream collaboration with Lucasfilm and a testament to the endless potential of LEGO building. We are excited to kick off our 25th anniversary celebration with the introduction of the new Starship Collection — builds inspired by iconic vehicles that are perfect for display. We are also welcoming a special 25th anniversary edition of everyone’s beloved droid, R2-D2! As we celebrate our first 25 years, the Force will be strong all year long!”
While the 25th anniversary R2-D2 (75379) isn’t out just yet, you can already pre-order it via the official LEGO site for AUD $199.99, with shipping starting March 1.
