The Mandalorian

A Blaster-Battling ‘Mandalorian’ Game is in the Works

Lucasfilm and Disney are expanding The Mandalorian universe beyond TV. With a film already in the works, the titular character is also getting its own game, according to a recent report from Insider Gaming. Per the publication, the EA – owned developer Respawn Entertainment is currently working on a new first-person Star Wars game starring a Mandalorian bounty hunter. The yet-to-be-named title will apparently not star Pedro Pascal’s masked bounty hunter and instead follow a different character from the clan-based culture.

While few details have been revealed, the report suggests the game is still in the early stages of development and will focus on fast-paced, action-packed gameplay, featuring multiple linear levels set across several planets rather than a full-fledged open-world experience, which frankly sounds great. The player’s character will be tasked with taking on bounties (obviously) for cash and reportedly also have access to their iconic jetpack, enabling “high mobility” through boost sliding mechanics similar to those seen in Respawn’s hit Apex Legends.

The report also suggests that the player’s character will have a health regeneration feature upon successive kills and a variety of interesting gadgets at players’ disposal, including a wrist rocket, grapple hook, and a visor for tagging enemies and bounties. No release date has yet been confirmed but Insider Gaming suggests the game is at least a year or two away.

The new report aligns perfectly with earlier statements from Respawn, which previously confirmed it was working on a first-person shooter set in the Star Wars universe, but refused to share any details at the time. Respawn has already showcased its creative capabilities with its Jedi series (Jedi: Fallen Order and its 2023 sequel, Survivor), which ushered in a new era for Star Wars titles, successfully translating the franchise’s core themes and thrilling action into an engaging single-player experience.

“We are huge fans of Star Wars here at Respawn and we’re thrilled to work with Lucasfilm Games on new titles that we have wanted to make for years,” Respawn founder Vince Zampella said in a statement at that time. It’s still early days for Respawn’s Mandalorian game and hard to say what the story will be about and whether it’ll be canon to the series or its own thing altogether. While we wait on more news, Star Wars fans can look forward to Star Wars Outlaws, the upcoming new open-world title from Ubisoft set to release this year.

Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the game takes you on the journey of a brand new character, promising vast and explorable worlds, thrilling hoverbike chases, and shady dealings as you navigate the galaxy’s criminal underbelly. Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws has no release date yet but is slated to release later in 2024.
