It’s rare that a television series comes out of the ether and captures mass global attention, but that’s exactly what Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has done. The Matt Smith-led epic takes viewers back to Westeros for an all-out bloody battle of wills, pitting family against family in a tale as old as time and viewers are audibly frothing it. Each Monday, when a new episode drops, households across the world are glued to their TV screens, eager to tune in and gawk at the series of steamy sex scenes, incestuous encounters, power struggles, incestuous escapades, ferocious fights and (did we mention?) incestuous exploits. Naturally, the dark subject matter, coupled with the universal patronage of the show, has birthed an abundance of great House of the Dragon memes. Since the show’s premiere, topics such as #HOTDMemes and Memes of the Dragon have been trending online, showing just how fiendish we all are. Well played, internet.

Best ‘House of the Dragon’ Memes

With each episode of House of the Dragon, viewers learn a little more about the beleaguered lives of the characters trapped in the battle for Westeros. More recently, a somewhat uncomfortable encounter between Rhaenyra, a royal with a never-ending lineup of potential suitors knocking on her door, and her uncle Daemon, who is seemingly not perturbed by his relation to her. They venture out on a sort-of cursed tour, where they visit a brothel and subsequently make out in a manner that can only be described as ‘deeply unsettling. Sure, we all came to House of the Dragon to watch steamy sex scenes, but this writer certainly wasn’t expecting them to be between uncles and nieces.

Needless to say, when a show experiences success on this level, meme-lords emerge from the shadows and Game of Thrones is no exception. Twitter has been flooded with House of the Dragon memes, covering everything from incest to childbirth, Matt Smith’s glorious hair and whatever else is happening in Westeros. In fact, such is the strength of the meme community that an unofficial House of the Dragon Memes page has even been set up on Facebook.

Now, we should preface this by saying that this list of memes probably contains a bunch of spoilers, so read on with caution. If you haven’t yet caught up with what’s happening on-screen, you’re in for an education of the nastiest kind. Here is a list of the best House of the Dragon memes on the internet.

What is ‘House of the Dragon’?

For those who haven’t yet heard of House of the Dragon, or who have been living under a rock, the Game of Thrones prequel has exploded in popularity since it was released in Australia on August 22. Banking on the success of the hit series from the early 2010s, the show revisits the seven kingdoms of Westeros as first penned by master author George R.R. Martin. Set two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, the new prequel follows House Targaryen, exploring a vicious battle for power that foreshadows an all-out war known as the ‘Dance of the Dragons’.

The latest series is based on Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, however, showrunners Miguel Sapochnik (who has since stepped away) and Ryan Condal previously indicated there will be quite a bit of creative licence taken this time around. While that statement had some fans worried about the quality of the show, the first episode blew expectations out of the water. House of the Dragon‘s debut was the highest premiere ratings ever for an HBO series, netting around 10 million viewers. Perhaps even more impressively, viewership for Episode 2 actually increased by two per cent, tallying 10.2 million viewers domestically across US HBO Max and linear telecasts, according to IndieWire. The incredible result saw HBO make the (obvious) decision to renew House of the Dragon for a second season, just two episodes into the first instalment.

“It was wonderful to see millions of Game of Thrones fans return with us to Westeros last night. House of the Dragon features an incredibly talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into the production, and we’re ecstatic with viewers’ positive response,” HBO & HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys said following the massive Episode 2 numbers. “We look forward to sharing with audiences what else George, Ryan, and Miguel have in store for them this season.”

It wasn’t simply a case of people tuning in, either. The initial House of the Dragon reviews revealed a growing appetite for more Game of Thrones content, with viewers cautiously optimistic about the new series. At the time of writing, House of the Dragon holds a seriously impressive 85 per cent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with 305 of 356 critics deeming it “fresh” (i.e. worthy of a score of 60 per cent or higher).

House of the Dragon is co-created and executive produced by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal. The star-studded ensemble cast includes Paddy Considine (The Third Day), Matt Smith (The Crown), Olivia Cooke (Ready Player One), Emma D’Arcy (Truth Seekers), Steve Toussaint (Doctor Who), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Fabien Frankel (The Serpent) and Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill).

Where will I be able to watch House of the Dragon?

In the United States, Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon is available to watch on HBO and HBO MAx. New episodes of the prequel series premiere on Sunday nights at 9pm ET/PT. In Australia, the Game of Thrones prequel is available to watch on Binge and Foxtel at 11am each Monday. According to the networks, only Binge and Foxtel subscribers will be able to stream the series, however, both options offer a free trial option.
