If you were worried that HBO’s take on seminal video game The Last of Us was destined to end this year, rest easy knowing that season three has been greenlit and is on the way.
The highly-anticipated second season of HBO’s breakout zombie thriller is dropping on Max on 14 April, 2025, but we now know that this upcoming season won’t be our final look into the world originally created by PlayStation Studio Naughty Dog.
Naughty Dog studio head, writer, director, and executive producer Niel Druckmann said the creatives behind the show are thrilled to continue the story.
“To see The Last of Us brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support,” he said.
“Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity.”
Mazin, who also acts as executive producer, writer, and director on the show, said that they approached the second season with the goal of creating something they could be proud of, and that the end result has exceeded that.

While the second season hasn’t launched yet, it’s easily one of the most anticipated television launches of the year. If you haven’t watched the show yet, you can find season one streaming now on Max – HBO’s newly launched streaming service – while the seven episode season two will launch 14 April, with new episodes launching each Monday.
HBO’s executive vice president Francesca Orsi noted that the production of the second season is an outstanding achievement for the team behind it, and that they’re thrilled to continue Craig and Neil’s storytelling into “what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season”.
A third season of the show was rumoured just a few months ago, while Druckmann also noted that there was unlikely to be a third video game in the series. Rather, it seems like the show will veer off into new territory, or the events of the second game will be stretched over the second and third seasons.
