- Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming service Max is launching on 1 April
- The service will bring together Warners Bros. Discovery and HBO content
- There will be three pricing tiers: Basic with ads, Standard, and Premium
Prep your wallets, everyone, there’s a new streaming service in town. Warner Bros. Discovery have announced that its incoming ‘Max’ streaming service, which will bring together everything from WB and HBO, as well as classic TV shows, movies, and lifestyle content, will be dropping on 1 April.
By far the service’s biggest show at launch will be The Last of Us’ upcoming second season, dropping 14 April on Max, and in order to goad you into diving in the service is offering a discounted rate if you sign up in the first month.
“Max’s breadth and depth of premium entertainment is unparalleled, and for the first time Australians can enjoy all of this world-class content in one place,” Michael Brooks, General Manager of Australia and New Zealand at Warner Bros. Discovery, said.
“Combined with a variety of plans and pricing, including a strong introductory price until April 30, Max will offer a distinct streaming proposition in the market.”
As with most streaming services, there’ll be multiple tiers (Basic with Ads, Standard, and Premium), and we’ll break down the differences below.

Max’s Pricing and Tiers Explained
The largest differences between tiers is whether you’re comfortable with ads, whether you need your content to be in 4K, and whether you expect you’ll want to watch shows offline.
Also, as far as we know so far, there will be no free trial period.
Basic with Ads | Standard | Premium | |
Launch Price (valid until 30 April 2025) | AU$7.99 per month or AU$79.999 per year | AU$11.99 per month or AU$119.99 per year | AU$17.99 per month or AU$179.99 per year |
Regular Price | AU$11.99 per month or AU$119.99 per year | AU$15.99 per month or AU$159.99 per year | AU$21.99 per month or AU$219.99 per year |
Simultaneous Devices | 2 | 2 | 4 |
Streaming Quality | Full HD (1080p) | Full HD (1080p) | Up to 4K (2160p) |
Downloads | No | Up to 30 downloads | Up to 100 downloads |
Though the Standard and Premium tiers allow for users to download content, it should be noted that this will almost certainly be kept within the Max app, and won’t be transferrable. You won’t be able to download a show, put it on a flash drive, and watch it elsewhere, for example. Rather, downloading a show will allow you to watch it without internet access, though you’ll still need to do so from within the Max app.
How do these prices stack up to the competition? Max’s prices are in-line with some of the expensive options out there today, with Netflix, Max, Binge and Stan all hovering around $22 at the top end. Prime Video and Apple TV+ are still cheaper than Max’s Standard Pricing (not counting the introductory offer) – if you want more of a comparison, check out our complete guide to streaming services in Australia.
