While we’re still waiting for a glimpse of the action, Amazon Studios’ big-budget holiday action comedy Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, has finally locked in a theatrical release date. Per Deadline, Amazon MGM Studios and Seven Bucks’ four-quadrant action-adventure Christmas film will hit theatres worldwide on November 15, 2024.
Helmed by Jake Kasdan from a screenplay by Chris Morgan, Red One is billed as “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre,” and is based on an original story by Hiram Garcia, the President of Production at Seven Bucks.
Similar to other Amazon MGM theatrical releases, Red One will hit theatres first before streaming on its home turf, Prime Video. Johnson took to Instagram to share his excitement for the film, saying, “Our movie is a big, fun, action packed and fresh new take on Christmas. Think JUMANJI meets MIRACLE ON 34TH ST meets HOBBS & SHAW with a dash of HARRY POTTER and sprinkled on top with my all-time favorite Christmas movie, ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE…”

Further expressing his bullishness on the film Johnson said in a statement, “Hold my Mana, because this is exciting. Our Seven Bucks is very bullish on our partnership with Amazon Studios; underpinned with some innovation, some pioneering and a lot of positive energy and passion. I’ve been very impressed with Jen Salke and her team’s vision and ambition to create an enormous, fun and unique Red One holiday universe for families around the world to enjoy.”
While it’s unclear what roles Johnson, Evans, or the entire ensemble will be stepping into, joining the two leading men in the cast are J.K. Simmons, Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, and Wesley Kimmel. Seven Bucks Productions’ Hiram Garcia, along with Johnson and Dany Garcia, Chris Morgan Productions’ Chris Morgan, and The Detective Agency’s Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar, produce Red One.
Executive producers on the project include Barry Waldman and Ainsley Davies of Chris Morgan Productions, with co-producers John Wildermuth and Sky Salem Robinson of The Detective Agency. Warner Bros. Pictures will be responsible for international distribution as part of its deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
In a discussion about the movie, Hiram Garcia characterised it by saying, “Red One is incredibly special to me and a story I’ve wanted to tell for years. An epic, edge-of-your-seat, action adventure that takes beloved holiday mythology and turns it on its head. I’m thrilled to have our Seven Bucks team join forces with Amazon to bring this fun holiday tale to life for a global audience.”
