Netflix Reveals First Look at Explosive ‘Money Heist’ Spinoff ‘Berlin’

After looting every penny from the Royal Mint of Spain (and in the process, our hearts), Money Heists beloved character, Berlin, is returning for another big escapade in the form of a new eight-episode prequel series that sees Pedro Alonso returning to play the fan-favourite character. Simply named Berlin, the Netflix-exclusive heist drama is set to hit the platform in December and is the brainchild of Money Heist creator/writer Álex Pina.

The streamer dropped the news with a brief announcement trailer teasing the TV series‘ plot, which admittedly had been under a cloud of contention. Alonso’s character is technically dead in the present Money Heist timeline, meaning this spin-off series will likely be set before the events of the main show, uncovering the life of the jewel thief before he teamed up with his brother, the Professor (Álvaro Morte) and the rest of the gang to carry out Spain’s largest ever heist. The newly revealed announcement teaser kicks off with a highly elaborate replica of a bank, with an unidentified man’s hand walking us through the whole affair. We see a car arriving at the bank’s gate, a mini-figure of a man entering the bank, followed by images of the bank’s layout and a vault.

The camera pans inside the vault, giving us a peak at the treasures it contains, when the aforementioned hand suddenly removes a crimson gem. Suddenly, the camera pans around and reveals the hand belongs to non other than Berlin himself. However, our protagonist gets distracted by an unknown woman’s footsteps and upon returning to the model, Berlin finds a mini paper figure of a woman, potentially alluding to one of his many previous love interests.

Netflix is using the phrase “city of love” to describe the show’s setting which clearly hints at Paris being the central backdrop for Berlin‘s upcoming robbery. Alongside Alonso, the upcoming prequel series will star Michelle Jenner as Keila, Begoña Vargas as Cameron, Julio Peña as Roi, Tristán Ulloa as Damián, and Joel Sánchez as Bruce.

Since the series happens before the events of the original show, the likelihood of other fan-favourite characters appearing is pretty high, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Berlin is co-written by Pina, David Oliva, David Barrocal, and Esther Martinez Lobato. Pina has previously described it as “a trip through the golden age of the character when he robbed around Europe crazy in love.

Oooh, that sounds like it’s just what we would want to see. With Netflix’s Berlin arriving later this year, expect plenty of white-collar crime, romance, high-stakes drama, and tension mixed with a few of laughs, as one of TV’s most charming thieves returns for another grand heist.
