Going from Twilight to Dark Knight, it’s just been announced that Robert Pattinson is in final negotiations to play the caped crusader in the 2021 project, ‘The Batman’. A fan favourite superhero, Batman has been portrayed by some of the best actors Hollywood has to offer. Most recently, Ben Affleck in the abysmal Justice League adaptations and before that Christian Bale in Nolan’s exquisite Dark Knight Trilogy.
Known best for playing teen heart-throb vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson has some big shoes to fill. Not exactly known for his acting chops, Pattinson’s performance will depend upon a solid script and captivating supporting actors. Since his arrival with the blockbuster Twilight series, the 32 year old made a successful transition into the arthouse fare. Other than an unnamed Christopher Nolan (yes, the Dark Knight director) project scheduled for a 2020 release, this will be Pattinson’s first return to studio films since 2015.
Whilst many think that it’s a bit too soon for another attempt at a Batman franchise, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has opted to resurrected the hero after the hit and miss Justice League series. At the helm of the latest project is Matt Reeves, best known for writing and directing the Planet of the Apes trilogy. If this is anything to go by we’re in for action packed, plot driven drama.
Most superhero movies of today fall short when they trade in character arcs for over the top action sequences. Fingers crossed, Warner Bros. and DC Comics have learnt from their recent flops and invest the right amount of time, money and effort it takes to make a film, rather than trying to rival the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
