The cast of Ari Aster's new A24 western 'Eddington'

Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal to Lead Ari Aster’s A24 Western ‘Eddington’

Striking back after Beau Is Afraid‘s box office stumble, Ari Aster is aiming high with his upcoming A24 project, Eddington. Reuniting with Joaquin Phoenix, Aster has assembled his most dazzling ensemble yet, featuring Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone (fresh off her second Oscar win for Poor Things), Luke Grimes, Dune: Part Two‘s Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Clifton Collins Jr., and Micheal Ward.

Unsurprisingly enough, the plot of Aster’s Eddington remains under tight wraps. A24 has only described the movie as a contemporary Western focusing on “a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.” According to a previous World of Reel report, the film might also involve a couple stranded near Eddington who are initially welcomed by the townsfolk. But as darkness descends, the idyllic facade crumbles, transforming the town into a nightmare.

A24 has confirmed that production for Eddington has already kicked off. Ari Aster will write, direct, and produce alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji serves as director of photography. A24, which distributed Aster’s previous films Hereditary, Midsommar, and last year’s Beau Is Afraid, will co-produce Eddington with Square Peg, marking their sixth team-up.

Beyond the powerhouse cast and a tantalising plot tease, details about Aster’s Eddington remain shrouded in secrecy. A full synopsis and release date are also yet to be revealed, however, with the film already in production, rumours are circling that Eddington could potentially hit theatres sometime next year. Further to that, an all-star cast featuring Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, Aster’s return to horror, a genre he’s mastered, has already made this mysterious project highly anticipated.
