New appointed Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy has made no secret of his desire to reprise his iconic role as Peaky Blinders leader Thomas Shelby and it appears he may finally have got his wish. Steven Knight, the creator of the hit BBC series has confirmed rumours of an upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, revealing that Murphy will reprise his iconic role.
In a recent interview with Birmingham World at the premiere of his upcoming British TV series This Town, Knight responded to mounting speculation regarding Murphy’s involvement. “He definitely is returning for it,” he stated regarding Murphy. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth (England).” The film, which still has no official name, will unfold during World War II and is scheduled to commence shooting sometime this September at Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham.

Currently, no plot synopsis or details about the cast other than Murphy’s return have been revealed. It’s also unclear how the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie will fit into the show’s universe and whether it will continue the story where the series left off. Riding high after his Oscars win, Cillian Murphy has repeatedly expressed his excitement for returning to the Peaky Blinders project.
He even reiterated his interest earlier this month, telling the Irish Star, “I have always said that if Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer, I’ll be there.”
Though details are scarce about the Peaky Blinders movie, creator Steven Knight offered some clues in a recent Esquire interview. Knight has a firm grasp of the film’s central plot, which will weave together two stories.
“The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. How the story will unfold, I don’t know.” he said. “What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.”
Knight even dropped hints about the Peaky Blinders movie cast, suggesting some familiar faces from season six will be back for more. In his words, “In series six we’re bringing in the new generation, and they are going to be part of what happens in the film. I think it’s finding those actors that you just watch and you think, there you go. There’s the future.”
Apart from the upcoming movie, Netflix is also developing two ‘Peaky Blinders‘ spin-offs. The first will focus on Polly, the matriarch of the Shelby clan, while the second takes the story to mid-20th century Boston, decades after the original series. Unsurprisingly, details about these spin-offs are scarce, and there’s no word on their release date either. Knight’s Peaky Blinders movie currently has no release date.
