Joaquin Phoenix is Playing Napoleon in a New Ridley Scott Epic

We’re not sure Joaquin Phoenix learned his lesson from playing the machiavellian Ancient Roman ruler Commodus in Gladiator. The man who laughed his way through the Joker and made us all fall in love with a computer AI in Her is taking on his largest (or shortest) role yet in the upcoming Napoleon Bonaparte biopic: Kitbag.

Teaming up with Ridley Scott yet again in what is expected to be another ginormous production Phoenix and Scott will make cinematic magic when they explore one of history’s most brilliant military minds Napoleon Bonaparte. Told through the paradigm of his “addicitve and often volatile” relationship with his wife, Josephine, Deadline reports the film is “an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor”.

Intended to capture Napoleon’s most notable battles, we can finally get a modern look at the Battle of Waterloo, which was so famously portrayed in the Russian epic Waterloo directed by Sergey Bondarchuk from Russia. Co produced by the Soviet Union and Italy in 1970, the famous battle scene featured 15,000 authentically dressed extras without any special effects. Considering what we’ve seen from the likes of Christoper Nolan in Dunkirk, in addition to the recent World War 1 epic 1917, expectations will be high.

Since Scott’s hands are already quite full with Matt Damon’s mullet in The Last Duel, in addition to the upcoming MGM drama that will Lady Gaga as the murderess Patrizia Reggiani in Gucci, Production is not due to start in Italy until March of next year. Until then, we’ll just be here rewatching his Oscar award winning performance as Arthur Fleck in Joker.
