Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Regina Hall Team Up for Paul Anderson’s Untitled Epic

Acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson has assembled a star-studded cast for his upcoming big-budget film, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall. The untitled movie has landed at Warner Bros., with Anderson penning the script and producing alongside Adam Somner and Sara Murphy, who collaborated with the director on 2021’s Licorice Pizza.

There’s no synopsis or logline yet, but Deadline says that the film is in a contemporary setting, and while DiCaprio, Penn, and Hall are the leads, the upcoming film will have a big ensemble cast that is still being finalised. With a “commensurate” budget, the film is the most commercial one PTA has attempted. “It (the film) came out of a relationship that Warner Bros Picture Group co-chairs/CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy built making PTA’s last film, Licorice Pizza, while they ran MGM,” says Deadline.

Anderson’s upcoming untitled DiCaprio-led film follows his highly praised Licorice Pizza, which nabbed three Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. Filming for the movie is slated to kick off sometime this month in California, and Variety further reports that the project has been “cloaked in secrecy” to the extent that Warner Bros. tried to keep the film’s existence a secret for months.

Per Variety, the film’s budget has “raised eyebrows, with insiders saying the budget is approaching USD$100 million, a considerable sum for an Anderson picture.” Despite being recognised as one of the most skilful filmmakers, Anderson has not been a strong presence at the box office. For example, Licorice Pizza in 2021 incurred significant financial losses, failing to recover its $40 million budget. As of writing, there’s no word on when the studio plans to release the movie but sometime in 2025 might be a good bet.
