Netflix Silently Greenlights Season 5 of ‘The Witcher’

Henry Cavill‘s run as Geralt of Rivia will soon be coming to a draw with the forthcoming third season of Netflix’s The Witcher, making way for Liam Hemsworth to assume the role in future seasons. However, despite Cavill’s big dramatic exit, Netflix still wants to keep the show going, as the streamer giant seems to have discreetly renewed the TV series for an additional season. During a recent Deadline interview, The Witcher casting director Sophie Holland nonchalantly spilled the beans that Hemsworth and company will be returning for a fifth season on Netflix.

When asked about whether The Witcher Season 4 is currently in development, Holland said, “We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth, and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five.” While Netflix may not have intended to reveal this news so early or in this manner, but Holland’s comment leaves little room for doubt, confirming that The Witcher Season 5 is definitely on the horizon.

The Witcher has become one of Netflix’s standout offerings, racking up substantial viewership and money for the streaming giant alongside other originals such as Stranger ThingsSquid Game and more. Such an early announcement of The Witcher Season 5 goes on to show that Netflix has trust in both the show’s calibre and Hemsworth’s portrayal. Beyond the main series, Netflix has also set its sights on expanding The Witcher into its own TV universe, encompassing spinoffs and prequels, which leaves the door wide open for Hemsworth’s Geralt to make casual appearances.

But before any of that, we will witness Cavill’s last outing as the monster slayer in Season three of The Witcher which will debut its first volume on June 29, followed by a second volume on July 27.

As per Netflix’s official plot summary of The Witcher Season 3, “As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”
