New Series from ‘Peaky Blinders’ Creator Tackles the History of Guinness

Steven Knight, the mastermind behind the beloved Peaky Blinders TV series, isn’t slowing down. Between crafting a new Star Wars film and juggling a host of other projects, the small screen legend is also brewing up a brand new drama for Netflix that’ll tantalize fans of dynastic dysfunction. The upcoming series, with the working title House of Guinness, will tell the story of, you might’ve guessed it, the Guinness family.

Set to dive into the world of the iconic brewing family, House of Guinness will follow the power struggles that erupt after the death of Benjamin Guinness, the architect of the brand’s meteoric rise. According to the official synopsis, the upcoming Netflix series will address the unique power struggle at the heart of arguably the world’s most famous pint.

“Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, will focus on the consequences of the death of Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the Guinness brewery, and the far-reaching impact of his cunning will on the fate of his four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben, as well as on a group of Dublin characters who work and interact with the growing juggernaut that is Guinness.”

Written by Knight, in a co-production between the Peaky Blinders creator and his long-time collaborators at Kudos, the upcoming eight-episode hour-long drama will be directed by Tom Shankland and Mounia Akl. While no casting announcements have been made and a production start date is yet to be revealed, securing both directors suggests the TV series might already be in pre-production, and filming might likely begin in the coming months.

In an official press release, Steven Knight said that he has always been intrigued by the stories of the wealthy and influential Guinness dynasty, adding that he was excited to bring the characters to life. “The Guinness dynasty is known the world over – wealth, poverty, power, influence, and great tragedy are all intertwined to create a rich tapestry of material to draw from. I’ve always been fascinated by their stories and am excited to bring the characters to life for the world to see,” said Knight (via Whats On Netflix).

Anne Mensah, vice-president of content at Netflix UK, also hyped the upcoming project, comparing it to a powerhouse like Peaky Blinders. “We are beyond thrilled to be working with Kudos and the incredible Steven Knight to bring the story of the Guinness Family to Netflix audiences. It has all the power of Peaky Blinders but the scale and the sweep of a true family saga. Set in the UK and the US, we cannot wait to see this realised,” said Mensah.

As of writing, Netflix’s House of Guinness has no release date.
