Things are moving fast in the world of heists as the much-anticipated Ocean’s Eleven‘ prequel has finally received an official title, along with the roles of Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. Simply titled ‘Oceans,’ the upcoming prequel film will see the Barbie power du, as the mastermind parents of George Clooney’s Danny Ocean and Sandra Bullock’s Deborah “Debbie” Ocean. According to Showbiz 411, the film will delve into the Oceans’ world, where they mentor a young Danny and their daughter Debbie in the sophisticated art of stealing from the wealthy, with the Oceans having “a team” to help them in their daring exploits.
Taking it back to the swinging ’60s in Monte Carlo (specifically in 1962), ‘Oceans,’ will take place before the events of the Ocean’s film trilogy, laying the groundwork for the beloved Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen, along with the earlier spinoff, Ocean’s 8. Austin Powers director Jay Roach will be at the helm and the cast will be led by the confirmed stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Casting for the younger versions of Danny Ocean and Deborah “Debbie” Ocean is yet to be revealed, and there’s also no word on how far along the project is.
Talking a bit about the casting choices, director Jay Roach mentioned to AP News’ Lindsey Bahr, “Originally there were some questions about whether it would be weird to have (Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling) together again after Barbie. But I think there’s just some pairings you want to see over and over again. It’s such a powerful, powerful duo, you know? And it’s and the suspense of will they come together; will they trust each other enough to team up? That’s romantic.” During a recentGames Radar interview, Josey McNamara slyly hinted at the upcoming prequel, teasing, “I can’t really say much. But I think we’re just trying to do right by the franchise. I’m excited for people to experience it when it’s ready.”
When pressed about the on-set chemistry between Robbie and Gosling, McNamara not only praised their compatibility but also expressed a wish for more such collaborations, stating, “They’re wonderful together. The more projects even outside of that we can have them do would be amazing.” McNamara and Robbie co-founded LuckyChap, a production studio they created alongside Tom Ackerley and Sophia Kerr. LuckyChap has been a driving force behind various projects, including the recent ‘Barbie‘ movie. Furthermore, both McNamara and Robbie are actively backing the Ocean’s Eleven prequel, with Robbie also taking on a producer role.
