The latest offering in a long list of exciting new shows for streaming giant Netflix has been officially announced via a new trailer which dropped last night, and fans of British actor Sacha Baron Cohen will be thrilled to see his return to a more sombre, serious role on the small screen.
The Spy is Netflix’s incisive take on the story of Eli Cohen, a man who risked everything in the name of his beloved Israel in the late ’50s and early ’60s.
Eli Cohen was an Israeli spy who found fame and notoriety in the early ’60s for his daring espionage work in Syria, where he developed close relationships with the political and military hierarchy and became the Chief Adviser to the Minister of Defense.
Syrian counter-intelligence authorities eventually uncovered the spy conspiracy, captured and convicted Cohen under pre-war martial law, sentencing him to death and executing him in 1965. The intelligence he gathered before his arrest is said to have been an important factor in Israel’s success in the Six-Day War.
The series will see Baron Cohen take a more serious role–a departure from his usual comedy genre, with which he found initial fame with characters Ali G and Borat in the late ’90s/early 2000s.
The Spy is set to air on Netflix on September 6.
