Ah, another year, another Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Though this annual tome of titillatingly suggestive photography may be a relic of years gone by, it’s also a tradition, and much like Christmas or Fireworks Night, it doesn’t need to make loads of sense to be celebrated.
This year, we’re treated to the impossibly 45-year-old Tyra Banks on the cover–the third time the incredibly successful model has done a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover, her first being 23 years ago. She was the first black woman to be featured solo on the cover in 1997.
In a statement released by the publication, Editor MJ Day said: “Since Tyra’s first cover in 1996, she’s transformed herself into nothing less than a mogul, a cultural force and a supernova of inspiration and empowerment.
“She’s kind of the Swimsuit Issue ethos come to life, everything we know this franchise can be.”
This years edition also sees the inclusion of models Brooks Nader, Danielle Herrington, Kate Bock, Jessica Aidi, Paulina Porizkova, Robin Holzken, and Winnie Harlow, amongst others. Interestingly, the Swimsuit Edition, which is notoriously devoted to a notable lack of attire in its pages, has also featured up-and-coming Muslim model Halima Aden, sporting a colourful “burqini”.
Sportswomen featured this year include US soccer player Abby Dahlkemper, alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, and gymnast Simone Biles, to name a few.
