They’ve soundtracked many a wedding, pub sing-a-long and footy match for decades and now Powderfinger are reuniting for their first Australian tour in 16 years. Time to blow up that lads’ group chat.

Taking to social media, all five members of the band (Bernard Fanning, Ian Haug, Darren Middleton, John Collins and John Coghill) appeared in a video letting their fans know to expect a tour from September 2027.

“We’ve got a little announcement to make,” Fanning said in the video, “We always said that if we were going to get back together to do some shows you guys would be the first to know, and so now you’re the first to know.”

“We’re going to do some shows all around Australia from September next year,” before Middleton teased that the concerts they’re working on will be “something pretty special.”

Not too much is known about dates and ticketing details, but fans can head to the band’s website to sign up for information, which will be revealed at 6am AEDT On Monday, 12 October.

This tour would mark the first for the band since their ‘Sunsets Farewell’ tour back in 2010. In what was announced as their farewell run of shows, the band played 34 concerts around Australia, selling over 200,000 tickets, wrapping it all up in their hometown of Brisbane. However, there have been several instances of semi-reunions of the band in the years since 2010. Splendour In The Grass 2017 saw Fanning’s solo set crashed by three of the four other members for surprise performance, and they reunited virtually during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns to raise money for charity.

When Are Powderfinger Touring?

It’s been a long, long wait for fans of Powderfinger to see the band live: 16 years to be exact. Plenty has changed since 2010, after all. Chances are you didn’t have a Spotify account, Apple Music wasn’t even close to existing and TikTok was just a song by Ke$ha.

But, with the band’s announcement today, fans can finally get keen again. Hard to say the same for Powderfinger peers Silverchair, however, who shut down the possibility of a reunion for the NRL Grand Final earlier this year despite their beloved Newcastle Knights qualifying.

As for Powderfinger’s reunion tour dates, we don’t know too much right now beyond the fact the tour will kick off in September 2027. Hard to say at this point how many dates they’ll play, or where they’ll visit, but given the extensive farewell tour and how much Australians love this band, it’s probably a safe bet to say they’ll be on the road for a while.

And, just to start the rumour mill, the AFL and NRL Grand Finals both happen toward the end of September/early October, so I imagine that bidding war will be well underway to secure some iconic Australia pre-game entertainment (if it hasn’t already been won).

The tour announcement comes after a series of teasers were posted by the band, with billboards being seen in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. The teasers all included cryptic clues and references to the band, but nothing about what they’d actually announce at the time.
