‘Wallet Strikes Back’: Study Reveals Aussies Have an Appetite for Pre-Loved Luxury

You might think the rise of digital wallets, Apple Pay, G-Pay, and all the other tap-and-go payment alternatives would send our trusty, old-fashioned leather billfolds into extinction.
But it turns out, like John Wick coming back from a seemingly fatal fall, the wallet is still very much alive and kicking. According to recent research from eBay Australia, a staggering 88 per cent of Aussies surveyed still carry a wallet. And if that isn’t enough to make you hold onto your cards, more than one-third of those surveyed (37 per cent) prefer luxury brands when shopping for wallets.
In a statement to Man of Many, eBay Australia’s Head of Fashion, Brooke Eichhorn, said, “eBay Australia is looking to democratise luxury sustainable fashion and we hope our Authenticity Guarantee expansion to include luxury wallets will give Aussies more confidence that they are buying the real deal.
“Our survey found that wallets are still overwhelmingly popular in Australia despite the rise of digital wallets. More than a third of Aussies prefer luxury brands when shopping for wallets with one of the most watched items on eBay the men’s Louis Vuitton Pocket Organiser. The results showed functionality is important, with card wallets the most popular style for men.”
For more than half of the survey responders, the allure of a pre-loved luxury wallet comes down to one simple factor: affordability. When asked why they’d consider buying a pre-owned luxe wallet, 51 per cent said it was all about getting a better deal.

And it’s during this part of the transaction process that eBay Australia steps up to the plate. Regarding wallet styles, Aussies favour card wallets, coin wallets, and envelope wallets, making it clear to everyone that functionality is critical for men when it comes to wallet shopping.

So, how does eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee work? Eligible items will be marked with a blue tick on eBay. After purchase, they’ll be sent to eBay’s Sydney authentication facility for expert verification, all at no extra cost to the buyer or seller.
