It’s a preppy, Disney sweater vest world after all. In honour of Disney’s 100th anniversary, prolific American designer Tommy Hilfiger has partnered with the conglomerate for a preppy-themed collaboration titled “Disney x Tommy”.
In a move that feels as American as the apple pie they serve at Disney World, preppy collegiate styles have been modernised with a manga twist. Illustrations of Mickey Mouse and his crew, including Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Goofy, Donald Duck and Daisy Duck can all be seen in a display of kitsch styles and silhouettes. And in trademark Tommy style, the range also offers a series of inclusive, adaptive designs. The bulk of these garments explores Disney’s central characters on an array of classic staples including rugby-style pullovers, tapered pants and blazers, with bespoke details including the brand new edition of the “TH” monogram.
Laced with nostalgia, the all-over prints pay homage to the original craft of Disney’s artists—the bomber jackets in particular lean into a familiar and dreamlike childhood authenticity from that of famous Disney artist Mary Blair.
In the 1950s, Blair was known for her fluid and conceptual paintings that created the signature feel of classics like Fantasia and Dumbo. In the years that have passed, the artist has been lauded for her ability to tap into the art of storytelling via her youthful imagination—something the two American brand pioneers know very well.
In a statement, Hilfiger spoke of the significance of the exuberant collaboration, “Colliding Mickey and Friends with the Tommy Hilfiger brand DNA has been one of our most fun collaborations to date. It’s a collectible edition of our favourite prep classics.”
A spokesperson for Disney agreed with these sentiments, hinting that their shared love of youthful storytelling was the binding force behind this momentous collaboration. “The Disney x Tommy collection is a true celebration of Disney’s 100th anniversary and showcases the creativity and storytelling that both Disney and Tommy Hilfiger are known for.”
While there are a few standouts of the range, the adaptive pieces are really something to ride Space Mountain about. Many of the t-shirts and polos include useful magnetic closures and alternative offerings for an inclusive wearing experience—a thoughtful inclusion by the American designer. But undoubtedly, it’s Manga Mickey stitched into Hilfiger’s signature Ithaca stripe shirt that will have this range at the top of many a purchasing list. Something refined and classically American that you don’t see at the theme park.
