Chris Hemsworth Audemars Piguet

Chris Hemsworth Caught in Controversial Watch Blunder

Chris Hemsworth is more or less, the most likeable person on earth. From his chiselled good looks and charming personality to his obvious on-screen talent and entrepreneurial endeavours, the 37-year-old actor is among the world’s most adored personalities. However, the hulking Aussie star may have put a few noses out of joint over the weekend.

Chris Hemsworth Audemars Piguet 1

Under the blanket of an ’80s themed party, Hemsworth, along with superstar actors Idris Elba and Matt Damon descended on the inner-city Sydney suburb of Barangaroo. Donning a white singlet, aviator sunglasses and adidas track-pants, the actor looked the part, however, as the lads over at DMARGE rightly pointed out, it was what wasn’t wearing that was cause for concern. Hemsworth, the global ambassador for heritage watch label TAG Heuer was spotted without the brand’s fabled timepieces on-wrist. Instead, the Aussie star was captured flaunting a gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak.

Originally released back in 1972, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is a true horologist’s endeavour. According to legend, the watch and integrated bracelet were conceived by icon of design, Gérald Genta, in less than 24 hours. However, it wasn’t until 1977 that Audemars Piguet introduced yellow gold to the mix, elevating the release to near-godlike status. With the divine one himself now sporting the Royal Oak despite opposing brand affiliation, you could argue the transition is complete.

While it’s hard to tell exactly which model Hemsworth is wearing, it does appear to be the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph reference 26320BA, a 41mm timepiece that features an 18k gold case. Sporting the pantograph-manufactured ‘Grande Tapisserie’ dial, the stunning watch is powered by the Calibre 2385 and features a remarkably thin profile and a 55-hour power reserve.

You can’t argue that the watch is an outstanding piece of horological design, but it does raise an interesting predicament for Hemsworth. As the face of TAG Heuer, the actor is intrinsically linked to the iconic watch brand, often seen wearing the TAG Heuer Connected Watch during his many Instagram workouts or the TAG Heuer Carrera Sport Chronograph to red carpet events. With an Audemars Piguet now taking centre stage, could the God of Thunder be facing a clap-back of his own?
