Stellar timekeeping and functional design are the crux of pretty much everything in the respective worlds of motorsport and watchmaking, so it’s no wonder they often collide. On the horological side of the aisle, no one bridges the gap quite like TAG Heuer. Since the early 1970s, the Swiss luxury legend has been connected to Formula 1 through partnerships with Ferrari, McLaren and, most recently, Oracle Red Bull Racing, but perhaps the brand’s most significant contribution to the sport came in 1986.

Released at the height of the Alain Prost/Ayrton Senna era, the original TAG Heuer Formula 1 collection comprised a range of entry-level timepieces that spoke to the ingenuity, design and performance of the world’s most dangerous racing championship. But despite immediate success and strong patronage, they wouldn’t stick around forever. In 2000, parent company LVMH discontinued the Formula 1 collection and with that, an entire era of entry-level release became cult collector’s items. More than two decades later, and just a few weeks after being reinstated as the sport’s official timekeeper, TAG Heuer has revived the Formula 1 collection with five brand-new chronographs.

At LVMH Watch Week 2025, the brand celebrated the return of the Formula 1 collection with four standard releases and a special edition Oracle Red Bull Racing Team model. The stunning example follows iconic precursors and is forged from grade-2 titanium with a checkered flag pattern as a visual theme.

No matter where you land in the lineup, you’re getting the spirit of auto racing in horological form. Updated features include a sharper and more aerodynamic case design that purposefully evokes the shape of an F1 racecar. Peer close to behold subtle micro-perforations on the bezel, a clever reference to brake discs. Speaking of subtle details, the indices resemble the front of F1 vehicles, while the coloured ring between the case and bezel pays homage to the precise engineering of professional motorsport. That’s all in conjunction with functional features like the tachymeter scale, the triad of subdials, and the compact date window.

When crafting their latest stunners, TAG Heuer drew further inspiration from “Grand Prix by night,” i.e. night racing. The result is a vivid and undeniable contrast between brighter colours and darker tones, the specifics of which vary from one model to the next. Each watch has also been optimised in terms of lug-to-lug distance and lightweight titanium construction so as to dial up the ergonomics. Some models feature extra DLC coating and a versatile rubber strap for enhanced wearability. Apparently, the discomfort of driving in a small cockpit at super high speeds is one thing TAG Heuer didn’t want to emulate…and who can blame them?!

From the updated case shape to the lacquered crown rings to the dynamic use of colour to the skeletonised hour and minute hands and more, each TAG Heuer chronograph is simply bursting with pointed detail and mechanical prowess. Behind the wheel—proverbially speaking—is Calibre 16, one of the watchmaker’s most successful automatic chronograph movements to date. Here’s a closer look at each of the five new releases:

  • TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Ref. CBZ2082.FT8096 – A black opaline dial with a red lacquered track renders an immediate impression on this superlative chronograph. The entire layout conjures the essence of an F1 racecar at just the briefest glance. Sealing the deal is a black rubber strap.
  • TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Ref. CBZ2085.FT8093 – This model swaps in a black DLC case of grade-2 titanium and red strap to impart a similar vibe of aggressive motorsport.
  • TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Ref. CBZ2084.FT8097 – Bright blue accents cut through a cloak of blackness on this striking model to deliver the visual theme of “Grand Prix at night.”
  • TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph Ref. CBZ2086.FT8098 – This sleek iteration continues the “racing at night” theme, punctuating its black layout with accents of neon green.
  • TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Oracle Red Bull Racing Ref. CBZ2080.FT8091 – TAG Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph x Oracle Red Bull Racing CBZ2080.FT8091

TAG Heuer takes the F1 concept to a glorious extreme with this limited edition chronograph, crafted in collaboration with the Oracle Red Bull Racing Team (the watchmaker’s official F1 partner). Every single design element drives home the connection between horology and motorsport, though it’s also just one heck of a wristwatch. It goes big on colour contrast, presenting yellow, black, red, white, and silver within a blue framework (which isn’t to mention the green luminescence under dark conditions). Around the back meanwhile, various brand emblems adorn the screw-down titanium caseback. Look once and then look again because you probably missed something the first time.

TAG Heuer’s new F1 chronograph collection is revved up and in the starting position, which is our cheeky way of saying it hasn’t yet been released. However, it is currently available to order, with deliveries starting in March 2025. It’s not the pure adrenaline shot of auto racing, but it’s close enough and far less dangerous. Get pumped.
