2024 Polestar 3 Price and Specs for Australia

After receiving nearly 7000 expressions of interest prior to launch, Polestar has revealed further details surrounding the Australian launch of their premium electric SUV, the Polestar 3.

Due to launch in Australia from Q1 2024, the car will arrive in two versions, the Long-range Dual motor, priced from $132,900 AUD before on-road costs, and the Long-range Dual motor with Performance Pack, starting at $141,900 AUD before on-road costs. Production will begin in Volvo Cars’ facility in Chengdu, China, in a ramp-up phase from mid-2023.

Headline features range from a maximum power figure of 380 kW to a range of 610km (WLTP) and a maximum DC charging capability of up to 250 kW. Looking beyond the figures yields a look at the vehicle’s new aerodynamic profile where a strong focus has been placed on retaining the hallmarks of an SUV, including a powerful and wide stance. There’s no doubt this is one of the best-looking electric SUVs on the market, but just how many sales it’ll poach from the likes of the BMW iX will have to be seen.

The performance figures of the new Polestar 3 are paramount in achieving its goal of becoming a true sports SUV.

The competition is fierce in this category with the likes of the KIA EV6 GT outpacing the Polestar 3 outright with a 0-100km/h time of just 3.3-seconds, and the same goes for the Tesla Model X with a 0-100km/h time of 3.9-seconds. Looking down the price bracket and the $87,590 AUD (plus on-road costs) KIA EV6 GT-Line AWD that we drove recently is a better comparison for overall pace with a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds. The similarly priced BMW IX xDrive40 does the sprint in 6.1 seconds.

“Our goal was to offer the performance and precision that define all Polestar cars, without compromising the comfort of the daily drive,” said Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s chief chassis engineer. “To do this, we used new components like the adaptive air suspension to engineer the ‘Polestar feeling’ for this type of car.”

Ultimately, looking beyond the plain power and acceleration figures and at the capability of the chassis would be the best way to assess the vehicle but with production examples not arriving in Australia until 2024, we’ll have to base our judgement on these preliminary figures until then. Regardless of this fact, a sub-5-second 0-100km/h time is plenty for an SUV.

Polestar has cleverly positioned the Polestar 3 between its rivals the Tesla Model X and BMW IX xDrive40 Sport. It’s a little slower than the Tesla as mentioned, but it offers more range (560km vs. 610km) and faster DC charging (120kW vs. 250kW). On the flip side, the BMW starts from around the same price but will ultimately cost more after options. The range on the BMW is far shorter than the Polestar 3 at just 425km WLTP. And while the BMW takes the same amount of time to charge at a DC charger, it has a smaller 76.6kWh battery.

What’s the Interior Like on the Polestar 3?

To put it in one word “sustainable”. Just like the Polestar 2 we drove earlier this year, the interior of the Polestar 3 has a focus on environmentally friendly materials that have been selected for their sustainability credentials while raising premium aesthetics and luxury tactility. These include bio-attributed MicroTech, animal welfare-certified leather and fully traceable wool upholsteries. Once the car is ready for production, a full life-cycle assessment will be completed to find ways of reducing carbon footprint.

Does it Have Good Infotainment?

We used to measure a person’s ego on the size of their truck, but in today’s EV market we simply measure them on the size of their screen. The Polestar 3 has a gargantuan unit stuck in the middle of the dashboard that’s running a rather impressive next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies. In layman’s terms, it’s the same chip that runs top-tier smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Android Automotive OS returns for the car’s operating system, co-developed with Google and fronted by a 14.5-inch centre display. It is an evolution of the technology first launched in Polestar 2 and something that we absolutely loved. While cars of the future are experimenting with an Apple CarPlay integrated unit, Polestar and Google have put the product into practice with the 2 and look to progress this innovative technology in the 3. Over-the-air (OTA) updates are included to allow for continuous software improvement and the introduction of new features without the need to visit a service point.
