Segway has come a long way from the motorised lectern of the early noughties. At CES 2025, the tech company debuted a suite of modern transportation devices and even an electric lawnmower, but it was the Segway Xyber e-bike that surprised even the most fervent of critics. Available for pre-order now ahead of a February 2025 release, the two-wheeled fully-electric bike may take its design cues from science fiction, but it is very much the real deal.
Sleek and streamlined, the Xyber feels like a perfect middle-ground between commuter and entry-level dirt bike. The design features many of the off-road features that you’d expect to see from more established and powerful releases, such as the inverted dual-crown fork suspension, and it comes backed by Segway’s Intelligent Ride System. While on-road, performance and important metrics are presented on a fully-laminated glass TFT display.
Segway Xyber Performance
When it comes to performance, the e-bike industry is rapidly improving. It was only a few years ago that electric two-wheelers struggled to reach speeds that made them a worthwhile purchase, but now, thanks to the development of brands such as Hallomotor and Hi-Power Cycles, e-bikes are becoming viable transportation options for those with a slightly longer commute. The Segway Xyber might not break any records, but the specs sheet does suggest a marked improvement.
The e-bike is powered by a torquey, 6,000-watt direct-drive motor that promises to go from 0 to 20 miles per hour in just 2.7 seconds. This acceleration performance is only offset by the 2,880Wh dual-battery configuration, which bolsters the aluminium alloy frame weight to a hefty 66.4 kg, but does deliver 112 miles of reported range (or up to 77 km on a single charge at max speed). Chuck in the 20×5″ all-terrain fat tyres, and you’ve got an off-road workhorse that can go the distance.
According to Segway, the Xyber is an unclassified e-bike—meaning that is not intended for use on the road. While that might seem entirely at odds with its purpose (and indeed 90 per cent of marketing material), it follows a familiar pattern for Segway products. In Australia, personal e-scooters remain illegal on NSW roads and road-related areas, including footpaths, shared paths and bicycle lanes, but that hasn’t shuttered the brand’s popularity. With Xyber, Segway is merely getting its foot in the door, with the brand confirming that a second version of the Xyber, which conforms to Class-2 e-bike requirements, is expected to arrive later this year.
Segway Xyber Pricing and Availability
The Segway Xyber is now available to pre-order for AUD$5,499, with deliveries expected to arrive in late January/early February. The latest e-bike forms part of Segway’s new lineup of personal transportation vehicles, which also includes the less powerful Xafari e-bike and the top-of-the-line Segway Ninebot Max G3 electric scooter. The full range of products will be available on the Segway website and at retailers in 2025.
