If things go wrong while riding a bike, it’s not necessarily the scrapes, cuts, road rash, or even broken bones that you should be worried about. Instead, it’s head injuries. That’s why wearing a helmet is so important. In fact, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, wearing a helmet reduces the odds of a head injury by 50 per cent and the odds of a head, face, or neck injury by 33 per cent.
Obviously, it’s important to wear a helmet, but they’re not always the most convenient or best looking option. The Hovding 3 Airbag Helmet not only improves the safety of your cycling, it’s also much less obtrusive and unsightly than a bicycling helmet.
The Hovding 3 is an airbag that is housed in a collar that you wear around your neck. Simply zip it closed and then activate it by clipping the sensor together. Once activated, the Hovding 3 records a cyclist’s movements 200 times per second. If an accident is detected, the airbag activates, releasing a hood-shaped helmet made of ultra-strong nylon fabric. The helmet encloses the head and neck, leaving only part of the face open.
The hood stays inflated long enough to protect against multiple impacts and to keep the neck in place. The airbag inflates in just 0.1 seconds. According to studies conducted at Stanford University, the airbag technology used in the Hovding 3 is eight times safer than a traditional bicycle helmet.
The collar is made of a durable cover that is waterproof and dirt-repellent. You can also pick up a seasonal cover for the Hovding 3. The collar is charged through a USB connection and has a 12-hour battery life. The Hovding 3 can also be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth to access a compatible app that tracks battery levels as well as accident data that is used to petition better infrastructure for increased cycling safety. The app will also alert emergency contacts in the case of an accident.
Hovding 3 is available through the company’s website and sells for £249 (approximately $310 USD).
