Google Pixel Watch: Google’s First-Ever Smartwatch Revealed

In addition to announcing the Google Pixel 7 Pro, Google has pulled back the curtain on what it describes as its “first full-featured premium smartwatch”: the Google Pixel Watch. With a sleek, minimalist design that makes competing devices from Apple and Samsung look like a Grand Complication from Patek Philippe, Google claims its new device has been designed with comfort and durability in mind. It’s certainly striking with its circular 3D domed glass that blends into the stainless steel body, but is it enough to carve out space in a market already dominated by devices from the aforementioned smartphone giants?

Much of that will depend on how effectively Wear OS by Google (Wear OS 3.5) powers the device. Google claims its operating system will deliver all the information you need at a glance, “providing help whenever and wherever you need it”. Also, you can customise the display to show as much or as little as you like.

Control your smart home devices through the Google Home app, or you might choose to channel your inner Maxwell Smart and just say “Hey Google” in order to activate Google Assistant to control those same devices around your home. Hey, it beats talking into your shoe.

The Pixel Watch will deliver notifications from Gmail and Google Calendar, enable you to make contactless payments, and provide turn-by-turn directions with Maps – all fairly standard features for a smartwatch in 2022. Meanwhile, its 32GB of on-device storage mean you can download music, podcasts or whatever else you care to carry around on your wrist. Otherwise, you can spring the extra loot for the 4G LTE model to use the Pixel Watch independently of your smartphone or any Wi-Fi networks.

As is always the case with smartwatches these days, fitness is a big focus for Google with the Pixel Watch. It has what the brand describes as “a deep integration” with Fitbit, which includes on-device machine learning and deep optimisation down to the processor level. This is designed to provide an accurate measurement of your heart rate, continuously tracking at once per second. The device helps monitor for irregular heart rhythms as well as the ability to better monitor and understand your sleep patterns.

Google claims the Fitbit experience has been “completely redesigned” for the device, offering 40 exercise modes, built-in GPS, and Active Zone Minutes functionality, which is intended to help you push yourself to reach that extra rep during workouts. Plus Pixel Watch users will receive a six-month Fitbit Premium membership that offers a range of features, including a Daily Readiness Score designed to help you know when to hit the gym hard or prioritise rest.

Promising up to 24 hours of battery life – something brands tend to overpromise and underdeliver on if we’re being honest – the Pixel Watch has a quick charge functionality that will get its battery life back to 50 per cent in just 30 minutes.

Pricing for Google’s Pixel Watch starts at AUD$549 for the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi model, which you can pick up at the Google Store, Officeworks and Harvey Norman. If you don’t want your new wearable tethered to your smartphone, the 4G LTE model is available for AUD$649 from the Google Store and Telstra. You can pre-order now, with devices becoming available from October 13. To discover more about the Google Pixel Watch, click on the link below.
