Swatch’s Sub-$250 SCUBAQUA is Moonswatch for the Sea-Dwellers

Swatch has announced SCUBAQUA, a new collection of dive-focused timepieces priced at under AUD$250.
Five new pieces were announced, including the Lion’s Mane, Black Sea Nettle, Egg Yolk, Blue Fire and Aurelia Aurita.
All five new models are made from the same Bioceramic material as the much-loved MoonSwatch releases.

After the soaring highs of the MoonSwatch collaborative collection, fun-loving watch brand Swatch is testing its depth. The watchmaker has unveiled an all-new collection of casual diving-focused timepieces, complete with a trademark pop of colour and a name that we still can’t quite figure out how to say. Feast your eyes on the latest Swatch SCUBAQUA collection.

Officially announced on May 8, the SCUBAQUA range reinterprets much of what we know and love about the Swatch brand for a more contemporary audience. Make no mistake, these aren’t your traditional slap bands, nor are they a total rehashing of the MoonSwatch collection. Rather, SCUBAQUA lands somewhere in the middle, colourful enough to catch your attention but with the same shift towards modern technology that has largely underpinned Swatch’s recent successes.

The collection, which comprises Lion’s Mane, Egg Yolk, Blue Fire, Black Sea Nettle, and Aurelia Aurita—each named after one of the most extraordinary jellyfish in the world—again uses vibrancy of colour as a key differentiator. The former three models are best characterised by the hyper-colour finishes, in red, blue, and lime green, respectively, while the latter two have a far more subdued aesthetic. The Black Sea Nettle release boasts a matte back and grey finish, while the Aurelia Aurita lands more on a sand-grey and white colour palette.

While the hue options are, much like all Swatch models, highly important to the overall appeal, the SCUBAQUA collection doesn’t rest on its colourful laurels. The new range sports a refined, upscale design that speaks to a more sophisticated approach, and there are nods to diving history littered throughout.

The crown positioned at 10 o’clock is a direct nod to the iconic OMEGA Seamaster, helping to enhance safety and offer greater ergonomics—an important element when you consider the 44mm case size. Of course, with a price point that is sub-$250, don’t expect to find an automatic movement underneath the colored transparent dial. Instead, the quartz movement that powers the timepiece takes centre stage and it’s not unlike a familiar stablemate.

Swatch’s decision to opt for a case design that is a fusion of solid colour and Bioceramic–the very same material from which the aforementioned MoonSwatches are crafted—is a fascinating play. By leveraging the past interest surrounding that line, Swatch can tap into the discerning market that has a burgeoning desire for luxury timepieces but without the financial means to make their dream a reality. Admittedly, with its hyper-vibrant colour schemes and semi-skeletonised dials, SCUBAQUA might not be for everyone, but at just AUD$245, nearly everyone could get one.
