Few names command the spirits world quite like Patrón tequila. Alongside giants like Don Julio and Jose Cuervo, it is as close to a household name as 100% tequila gets. Yet despite its global footprint, Patrón’s backstory defies the usual heritage tropes: it wasn’t founded a century ago in a dusty highland cellar, but in 1989 – the same year the Game Boy launched.

Dreamed up by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley, and brought to life by master distiller Francisco Alcaraz, Patrón helped define the modern ultra-premium category. The liquid was initially contracted out of Jalisco’s legendary Siete Leguas distillery before graduating to its own dedicated campus, Hacienda Patrón, in 2002.

Excluding one-off rarities, the distillery maintains an active roster of 13 expressions covering classic agings, unique cask finishes, and traditional tahona-crushed bottlings. After considerable nosing and sipping, here is every bottle in the core portfolio, definitively ranked. We didn’t rely on press notes to put this guide together. Our team personally tasted and benchmarked all 13 Patrón expressions side-by-side – it’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Patrón cristalino

13. Patrón Cristalino

First, we should note that there’s not a single entry on this list that we didn’t love, but we had to rank them, so rank them we did. Patrón Cristalino landed in the last spot because this añejo tequila didn’t wow us quite as much as some of the others on this list. Its clear appearance comes from charcoal filtering. The process removes the colour, but not the flavours and aromas.

  • Price: AUD $130-160
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: Before charcoal filtering, it’s aged 12-15 months in different oak barrel types (French oak, American oak, Hungarian oak, and new and used oak).
  • Nose: Before your first sip, you’ll smell toasted vanilla beans, roasted agave, toffee, orange peels, and charred oak.
  • Taste: The palate is centered on flavours like vegetal, roasted agave, vanilla beans, butterscotch cookies, dried fruits, citrus zest, honey, and oak.
  • Finish: The finish is long and warm, ending with a mix of agave sweetness and spicy oak.
  • Best for: This is a great choice for whiskey drinkers looking to get into tequila who don’t want to spend a fortune for a decent sipper.
Patrón ahumado silver 1

12. Patrón Ahumado Silver

This isn’t your average silver tequila. Though it’s unaged, it’s far from lacking flavour. This is because Patrón Ahumado Silver is a 100% Blue Weber agave tequila that’s roasted in underground ovens for a week using mesquite charcoal briquettes. The result is a tequila that tastes like part smoky mezcal and part unaged, mellow tequila.

  • Price: AUD $200
  • ABV:  41%
  • Cask type: Patrón Ahumado Silver is unaged.
  • Nose: Aromas of roasted agave, citrus peels, cracked black pepper, vanilla, oak, and campfire smoke swirl throughout.
  • Taste: Smooth, with notes of cracked black pepper, citrus peels, cooked agave, butterscotch, and swirling smoke.
  • Finish: Warm and sweet, ending with a mix of peppery spice, roasted agave, and a kiss of smoke.
  • Best for: Smoky mezcal or peated Scotch fans will love the smoky element of this blanco tequila.
Patrón reposado
Image: Patrón

11. Patrón Reposado

This 40% ABV, ultra-premium tequila was made from 100% Blue Weber agave from the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. Unlike a blanco or silver tequila, reposados spend a little time aging to gain character, flavour, and aroma. After slow-roasting the agave piñas, crushing them, fermenting them, and double-distilling, the tequila is matured for a minimum of 4 months in a combination of three barrel types.

  • Price: AUD $90-110
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: This tequila matures for 4 to 5 months in a combination of American oak, French oak, and Hungarian oak casks.
  • Nose: The nose is heavy on roasted agave, along with gentle notes of vanilla beans, toffee, dried fruits, and citrus.
  • Taste: The palate balances manuka honey, roasted agave, cracked black pepper, sticky toffee pudding, vanilla, and oak.
  • Finish: It ends with a warm, sweet finish that blends baking spices, agave, and oak.
  • Best for: This expression is for tequila drinkers who prefer mixing to sipping. Sure, you can sip this tequila, but you’re more likely to use it in your favourite cocktails.

10. Patrón Silver

When most tequila drinkers think of this brand, their mind likely goes directly to the iconic bottle of Patrón Silver you can find just about anywhere. And as blanco tequilas go, it’s a pretty good one. This unaged tequila is as no-frills as the brand gets. This clear, smooth-tasting tequila is made with 100% Blue Weber tequila, crushed using a traditional tahona stone wheel and roller-mill extraction, fermented in wooden tanks, and distilled in copper pot stills.

  • Price: AUD $80-100
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: Patrón Silver is unaged.
  • Nose: Citrus fruits, cooked agave, cracked black pepper, and vanilla beans are prominent.
  • Taste: The palate is velvety smooth with notes of vegetal agave, honey, orange peels, vanilla, and peppery spice.
  • Finish: The finish is long and warm, ending with a balance of agave sweetness and cracked black pepper.
  • Best for: Home mixologists and bartenders alike love this expression for its versatility in cocktails.
Patrón el cielo

9. Patrón El Cielo

You’re not likely to find many smoother blanco tequilas than Patrón El Cielo. The name translates to “heaven,” and it’s aptly named because this ultra-premium, 100% Blue Weber agave tequila is mellow from being distilled not once or twice, but four times in the smallest copper pot stills at the renowned distillery. It’s then chill-filtered to enhance its crisp, velvety flavour profile.

  • Price: AUD $230-270
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: Patrón El Cielo is a four-time distilled, unaged tequila.
  • Nose: The nose centres on toasted vanilla beans, roasted agave, lime zest, orange peels, honey, and peppery spice.
  • Taste: Sipping it reveals notes of cooked agave, tropical fruits, vanilla beans, and gentle baking spices.
  • Finish: The finish is long, lingering, and warm, ending with a mix of caramel sweetness and vegetal, cooked agave.
  • Best for: This expression is for drinkers looking for a smooth, easy-drinking gateway tequila you can sip slowly neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail.
Patrón ahumado reposado 1

8. Patrón Ahumado Reposado

We already mentioned Patrón Ahumado Silver; now it’s time for the reposado version. This 100% Blue Weber agave tequila is made by roasting agave piñas for a week in underground ovens over mesquite charcoal. After crushing with the traditional Tahona wheel, fermenting in open-air wood tanks, and double-distilling in copper pot stills, it matures for 6 months before bottling.

  • Price: AUD $90-110
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: This reposado tequila is aged for a minimum of 6 months in American white oak casks.
  • Nose: Herbal, vegetal, cooked agave, toasted vanilla beans, oak, dried fruits, and gentle smoke greet you before your first sip.
  • Taste: This tequila brings flavours of vanilla beans, butterscotch, roasted agave, cracked black pepper, wintry spices, and campfire smoke.
  • Finish: The finish is effortlessly smooth and warm, with robust smoke mixed with vanilla beans and roasted agave sweetness.
  • Best for: This gently smoky expression is a perfect choice for drinkers looking for a smoky rainy-day sipper or for mixing tequila to add a little smoke to your favourite cocktail.
Gran patrón platinum

7. Gran Patrón Platinum

With a name like Gran Patrón Platinum, you know this expression is something special. It’s not a reposado or even an añejo tequila. This luxury tequila is triple-distilled silver tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave. It’s roasted in brick ovens, crushed using the traditional tahona stone mill, and distilled in copper pot stills. The difference between this and other silver (or blanco) tequilas (besides the triple-distilling) is that it’s rested for a month in oak tanks. It also comes in a hand-numbered crystal bottle and a presentation case.

  • Price: AUD $340-360
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: While it’s a silver tequila, it’s rested for around a month in oak tanks.
  • Nose: Before your first sip, you’ll smell toasted vanilla beans, roasted agave, orange peels, honey, and tropical fruits.
  • Taste: The palate is focused on hints of orchard fruits, vanilla beans, cracked black pepper, citrus zest, roasted agave, and gentle oaky wood.
  • Finish: The finish is warm and clean, ending with a mix of agave sweetness and peppery spice that leaves you craving more.
  • Best for: This is a tequila for drinkers who enjoy a smooth, elegant tequila and like having it in a displayable centerpiece bottle.
Patrón el alto
Image: Patrón

6. Patrón El Alto

This is a truly special tequila you need in your home bar. While it’s labeled as a reposado (since the youngest tequila included in the blend is a reposado), it also contains añejo and extra añejo, making it a fairly mature blend. The result is a nuanced, multi-layered sipping tequila that deserves to be sipped neat or on the rocks on a cool evening, preferably around a roaring campfire.

  • Price: AUD $220-250
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: Featuring tequilas as old as 4 years, it was matured in a combination of American oak and French oak barrels.
  • Nose: Take a moment to nose this tequila, and you’ll find aromas of brown sugar, raisins, cooked agave, toasted vanilla beans, and oak.
  • Taste: The palate is a symphony of flavours including candied nuts, oak, treacle,  peppery rye, toffee, roasted agave, and vanilla beans.
  • Finish: It ends with a long, warm finish of fruit, spices, and roasted agave sweetness.
  • Best for: If you’re looking for a balanced, flavourful, aged tequila that is much more inexpensive than it should be, this is the tequila for you.
Gran patrón burdeos
Image: Patrón

5. Gran Patrón Burdeos

While its name doesn’t mention its age, this ultra-premium, luxury tequila is made from 100% Blue Weber agave. After roasting in brick ovens, crushing with traditional tahona rollers, and distilling twice, it matures for a minimum of one year and is finished before bottling. The result is a sublimely complex sipping tequila sure to be the talk of the holiday season among friends and family. Beyond the tequila’s quality, it comes in a hand-polished, numbered crystal decanter with a crystal stopper adorned with the Patrón bee, plus a custom corkscrew in a velvet-lined wooden box.

  • Price: AUD $800-1000
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: This nuanced tequila is matured first in a combination of American and French oak barrels, then finished in vintage Bordeaux wine barrels.
  • Nose: The nose centres on aromas of roasted agave, clover honey, oaky wood, toffee, vanilla beans, plums, dried cherries, and gentle spices.
  • Taste: The palate features notes of dried fruits, roasted agave, caramelised sugar, vanilla beans, wine esters, and gentle wintry spices.
  • Finish: The finish is long and warm, ending with a dry mix of vanilla beans, wine grapes, roasted agave, and cracked black pepper.
  • Best for: With its elegant crystal decanter, velvet-lined box, and price tag, this is a tequila for serious collectors.

The agave is crushed, and the agave fibers are added to the fermentation process to enhance the overall aroma and flavour. Then it’s matured in a combination of two unique barrels, giving it a complex, layered flavour profile that will make you forget all about your favourite bottle of single malt Scotch whisky.

  • Price: AUD $600-800

2. Patrón 100

It was a real toss-up between Patrón 100 and the classic Patrón Extra Añejo for the top spot. But the two couldn’t be more different, yet equally well-made. Patrón 100 is a blanco tequila made from 100% Blue Weber agave and double-distilled in small copper pot stills. You might be wondering how a blanco tequila landed so high on our list. It’s just that good. Plus, it’s 100 proof. This makes it a great choice for mixing into cocktails like the Margarita, Ranch Water, or Paloma.

  • Price: AUD $80-100
  • ABV: 50%
  • Cask type: Patrón 100 is an unaged tequila.
  • Nose: Scents of vegetal cooked agave, honey, vanilla, light minerality, and cracked black pepper swirl throughout.
  • Taste: Sipping it reveals a bold, warming palate of orange peels, roasted agave, vanilla, and cracked black pepper spice.
  • Finish: It all ends with a long, warm finish of peppery spice and sweet agave.
  • Best for: This tequila is a home bartender’s dream. At 100 proof, it won’t get lost in the background of any cocktail.
Patrón extra añejo
Image: Patrón

1. Patrón Extra Añejo

We finally made it to number 1. While it was difficult to pick just one, the top expression from this popular brand is Patrón Extra Añejo. It’s aged long enough, has a great flavour profile, and has no added gimmicks. It’s a classic extra añejo tequila that gets its aroma and flavour from maturing for a minimum of 3 years (but likely longer). If you only purchase one tequila on this list, make it this one.

  • Price: AUD $160-220
  • ABV: 40%
  • Cask type: Patrón Extra Añejo is aged for at least 3 years (but as long as 5) in a combination of charred American oak, French oak, and Hungarian oak barrels.
  • Nose: The nose blends charred oak, toasted vanilla beans, raisins, candied orange peels, caramelised almonds, and gentle spices.
  • Taste: A complex palate of caramel candy, brown sugar, roasted agave, cracked black pepper, cinnamon, and oak greets you on your first sip.
  • Finish: The finish is long, warm, and ends with notes of roasted agave and gentle wintry spices.
  • Best for: A classic sipping tequila. It’s guaranteed to turn any whisky fan into a tequila lover after one sip thanks to its nuanced, sublime flavour profile.

How We Tested & Ranked

Each expression was sampled neat. We ranked each bottle based on:

  • Agave purity: Prominence of cooked Blue Weber agave vs wood influence.
  • Balance & mouthfeel: Ethanol integration, sweetness, and complexity on the palate.
  • Finish: Length, warmth, and lingering flavours.
  • Value for money: Overall liquid quality weighed against real-world AUD retail pricing.

Patron Tequila FAQs

What is the difference between core Patrón and Gran Patrón?

The core Patrón range (Silver, Reposado, Añejo, Extra Añejo) represents the brand’s accessible baseline, using a hybrid extraction process of traditional volcanic tahona stone wheels and modern roller mills. The ultra-luxury Gran Patrón line (Platinum, Piedra, Burdeos) is an artisanal tier that relies entirely on 100% tahona-crushed agave, unique distillation protocols, bespoke cask programs like first-growth Bordeaux finishes, and hand-finished crystal decanters.

Does Patrón use additives in its tequila?

No, Patrón is certified additive-free by independent industry watchdog Tequila Matchmaker. Unlike many mass-market tequila producers that rely on permitted additives (such as glycerin, caramel colouring, oak extract, and sugar-based flavourings) to replicate age or smooth out harsher ethanol notes, Patrón’s core portfolio relies entirely on 100% Blue Weber agave, water, and barrel maturation for colour and flavour.

Where can tequila be made?

Like cognac in specific regions in France and bourbon in the US, tequila can only be produced in Mexico in specific areas of 5 states, with its heart in the town of Tequila (hence the name) in the state of Jalisco.

Is tequila made from a cactus?

No, tequila is not made from a cactus. It falls under the umbrella of mezcal (all tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila), meaning it’s a fermented alcohol made from the heart of the agave plant. While mezcal can be made from a variety of agave plants, tequila can only be made from the Blue Weber agave.

What is the difference between blanco, reposado, and añejo tequilas?

Instead of labeling tequilas with an age statement, they are labeled as blanco, reposado, and añejo. A blanco tequila is unaged or rested for up to 2 months. A reposado tequila is matured between 2 months and 1 year. An añejo tequila is aged between 1 and 3 years—anything longer is called an extra añejo tequila. There’s no age limit for this category.
