Like with all spirits, the world of tequila is extremely varied. There are bottom-shelf, plastic-handled tequilas that seem more like they belong in the engine of your car than in your stomach. There are middle-of-the-road tequilas that belong on every home bar in the country for sipping and mixing. Finally, there are ridiculously expensive tequilas that you and I will likely never afford unless we win the lottery or receive an unexpected inheritance from a mysterious, long-lost relative. However, like our list of the most expensive whiskies ever sold at auction, that’s exactly what we’re focusing on in this article, where we’re rounding up the most expensive tequilas in the world.
Most Expensive Tequilas in the World at a Glance
Highlights from our list include the following options:
- Most expensive tequila in the world: Tequila Ley .925 Diamante
- For something that doesn’t cost millions: Patrón En Lalique Serie 2 Extra Añejo
Now you’ve read about our favourites, let’s check out the complete list.

1. Tequila Ley .925 Diamante, USD$3.5 million
Price: from USD$3.5 million
While there’s a chance you’ll splurge for a bottle of the best tequila (we’re talking $200-300) if you’re a fan of the agave-based spirit and have the bank account of the owner of your favourite professional sports team, you’re going to want to buy a bottle of Tequila Ley .925 Diamante priced around USD$3.5 million.
If you didn’t guess it by the name, Tequila Ley .925 Diamante is the new Guinness World Record holder for the most expensive tequila in the world.
This insane price gets you a carefully crafted tequila made from 100% highlands of Jalisco-grown Blue Weber agave that’s slow-roasted and distilled two times in copper pot stills. It’s then matured in French oak barrels for up to seven years, and the result is a balanced, multi-layered liquid loaded with flavours like charred oak, vanilla, crème brulee, and wintry spices. While the liquid inside is noteworthy, it’s the bottle we’re most interested in. The eye-popping bottle is hand-crafted from pure platinum and white gold. But that’s not all. It’s covered in more than 4,000 diamonds, totalling 18.5 carats. The cap is also pure platinum and was artfully designed to look like the Aztec calendar.

- Bottle Design: Pure platinum and white gold casing encrusted with 4,100 diamonds

2. Tequila Ley .925 Ultra Premium, USD$225,000
Price: from USD$225,000
The world’s second most expensive tequila comes from the same house, Tequila Ley .925, which produces their Ultra Premium expression from 100% Blue Weber agave-based and prices it at USD$225,000 because of it. However, this ultra-premium tequila gets its hefty price tag not simply because this 100% Blue Weber agave-based tequila was matured for six years at the Hacienda La Capilla distillery in Jalisco, Mexico. No, it’s because it’s housed in a platinum with a white gold-adorned bottle. Like the Diamante bottle, it will only be produced in limited numbers, 33 to be exact, and they’re already sold. Sorry!

9. Patrón En Lalique Serie 2 Extra Añejo, USD$10,000
Price: from USD$10,000
The most expensive Patrón tequila in the world, En Lalique Serie 2 Extra Añejo, proves, once again, that you can’t go wrong with a well-made extra añejo tequila. This is especially true if you have a USD$10,000 hole burning in your pocket, but its price is not absurd considering some of the other options on our list.
This 80-proof tequila was aged eight years in American oak, French oak, and sherry barrels. The result is a complex, memorable tequila featuring flavours like clover honey, cooked agave, toasted vanilla beans, dried fruit, and oaky wood. While the tequila inside is exceptional, the bottle helps it fetch that high price tag, as only 299 were released. It’s housed in an Art Deco-inspired Lalique bottle from the famed French crystal designers.
- Category: Extra Añejo
- Tasting Notes: Nutmeg, candied citrus, vanilla bean, and mature wood

10. Cincoro Founder’s Series Extra Añejo, USD$4,000
Last but not least, Michael Jordan’s Cincoro Founder’s Series Extra Añejo, which comes in at a very expensive USD$4,000. Now, this bottle is a little special as it measures 1.75 litres of liquid and stands 21 inches tall. Still, with 523 bottles made and signed by MJ himself (and his co-founders Jeanie Buss, Wes Edens, Wyc Grousbeck, and Emilia Fazzalari), it’s one of the more affordable ways to get your hands on a genuine Michael Jordan signature.
The liquid inside is nothing to write home about, with the flavour notes reading wood, spices and light cooked agave on the nose, followed by intense oak, sweet agave, caramel, and light vanilla on the palate. However, it’s a genuine Extra Añejo, and has been aged far longer than required for Extra Añejo tequila. How long? Well, they won’t tell us that bit on the… which isn’t the best news when you’re paying around USD$4,000 for a bottle. Although technically speaking, Extra Anejo must be aged for at least three years in oak barrels.
- Tasting Notes: Cooked agave, butterscotch, cinnamon, dried fruits, and oak
- Bottle Design: Sculpted decanter with black crystal base and gold flourishes
- Notable Facts: Personally selected by NBA owner founders including Michael Jordan
- Availability: Available in limited batches via select luxury retailers
What Makes Expensive Tequila so Expensive?
However, before we take a deep dive into the world of over-the-top expensive tequilas, let’s get into tequila itself and what makes some of it so uncomfortably expensive.
At its essence, tequila is a spirit made from the Blue Weber agave plant. Like with cognac and bourbon, it’s geographically specific. While its heart is in the town of Tequila in the state of Jalisco in Mexico, it can also be made in a handful of other states, including Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.
Unlike with whiskey and rum, tequila doesn’t carry an age statement. Instead, you can tell roughly how old it is based on its type. These classifications include mixto (a tequila with less than 100% Blue Webe agave), blanco (unaged or lightly aged), joven (a blend of blanco and aged tequilas), reposado (aged for at least two months), añejo (aged for at least a year but not more than three years), extra añejo (aged at least three years), and cristalino (and aged tequila that’s filtered to remove color and impurities).
