We all have a few lower-end whisky bottles on our home bar. The bottles that you’re more likely to mix into an Old Fashioned, Boulevardier, or Whisky Sour than sip neat or on the rocks. But not all affordable bottles are made the same. Sure, you’d drink them neat in a pinch, but that’s not the reason they’re sitting on your shelf. These bottles are inexpensive, yet versatile and flavourful.
But while there are countless whiskeys well-suited for mixing, there are also many under AU $200 that totally outpour their price tag. These are the bottles that you don’t have to spend a ton on to be rewarded handsomely. When looking for sippable, reasonably-priced whiskies to add to your home bar, there’s a definable price-to-value ratio that you can use. Open the bottle and taste it. You’ll find that there are a lot more lower-priced expressions worth your time than you realised.
How to Find the Best Value Whisky
There are a variety of ways a whisky can offer more value than just the price you pay for it. First, it’s all about the master blenders and distillers and what they prioritise. Whiskies that outperform their price tag are usually made by prioritising the barrels, blending, and often higher proof expressions. If you’re looking for a value-focused whisky that tastes more expensive than it is, you’re going to want to stay far away from celebrity brands, flashy marketing, and limited-edition expressions (with some exceptions).
When we talk about bang-for-your-buck whiskies, we’re not looking at the bottom shelf of dust-covered bottles that are more likely to power a lawnmower than make a great dram. We’re talking about well-made, flavourful, balanced whiskies in the $100-$200 range. Sure, this isn’t cheap. But it’s also not uncomfortably expensive. Here are some of our favourite bottles that can easily be added to your bar cart without breaking the bank.
