The only political coverage you’ll catch from us this year comes from MasterFoods, who has rebranded their famous tomato sauce into a limited-edition “Democracy Sauce” for the upcoming federal election here in Australia.
That’s right, you can now add democracy sauce to your democracy sausage in the spirit of the election (or democracy sausage season).
Who cares about tomato sauce? Well, you do! Australians glugged up 4.9 million litres of MasterFoods Tomato Sauce last year. That’s nearly 10 million bottles worth of the sauce, making it the most popular tomato sauce in the country. It’s proudly made in Australia from a blend of ripe tomatoes (79%) and other spices including sugar, salt, onion, spice extract, and acidity regulator (acetic acid). Now, let’s take a closer look at the Democracy Sauce!

“We’re so excited to bring these two Aussie icons together – the democracy sausage is a national tradition, and MasterFoods is the perfect sauce to match. As Australia’s favourite tomato sauce, it only felt right to rename our most-loved product in honour of the star of the upcoming election, the Democracy Sauce.”
Sadly, like all good things, there’s a catch. You cannot buy the limited-edition MasterFoods Democracy Sauce at grocery stores. It will only be available to squeeze at select polling stations around Australia on election day.
That means you’ll be stuck with plain old MasterFoods Tomato Sauce when shopping at your local. However, that should only build some anticipation for that classic democracy sausage when it comes time to vote. Made from a blend of ripe tomatoes and a sprinkle of spices, there’s a reason why this tomato sauce is the country’s favourite, it’s bloody delicious!
Where does your heart lie? Fountain, MasterFoods, Ozesauce, Rosella? We’re team Heinz all day every day. Although, you might catch us at a polling booth with a cheeky MasterFoods “Democracy Sauce” in hand.
