Director Sam Hargrave is turning up the heat and setting things on fire (quite literally) for his upcoming action thriller Extraction 2. The well-known stunt coordinator turned director recently revealed that his team set their leading man Chris Hemsworth on fire for a fight sequence in Netflix’s upcoming sequel that’s being described as “the craziest oner in cinema history.” And yes, Hemsworth was literally on fire and there was no VFX or CGI involved. With the first movie featuring some kickass over-the-top fight scenes, it was a given that the sequel will up the ante for both Hemsworth and his character. However, the pyrotechnics team have taken things to flaming hot levels.
While talking to Empire Magazine, Hargrave talked about the whole creative process of the fiery hot action sequence, delving into how the Aussie heart-throb went above and beyond in order to deliver one of the most extreme action sequences that involved lighting his arm on fire time and again during a prison brawl, which was teased in the movie’s debut trailer. “For me, the image of Chris Hemsworth beating the shit out of a bunch of prisoners, while on fire, in the snow was something that I couldn’t pass up,” Hargrave told Empire. “And hats off to Chris. It wasn’t CG fire. And he had to do it over and over.”
Hargrave revealed that despite being such a celebrated and influential personality, the Thor actor bravely took on the task and was fully committed to performing the deadly action scene all by himself. “I don’t know a lot of people, let alone Hollywood A-listers, who are gonna let you light them on fire while on camera. If the wind blows the wrong way, the moneymaker’s right here,” Hargrave jokingly remarked. “We had a bunch of different jackets all prepped for him, with different layers. But we lit Chris Hemsworth on fire, and he beat up a bunch of guys all night. It was pretty incredible to watch.” We’re sure it was.
Extraction 2 is one of the highly awaited films Netflix’s 2023 calendar and will pick up from where we last saw Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, who after a near brush with death is ready to embark on another rescue mission. As per the official description for the upcoming sequel, “After barely surviving the events of the first movie, Rake is back as the Australian black ops mercenary, tasked with another deadly mission: rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.”
Extraction 2 hits Netflix on June 16. Check out the trailer above.
