‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 Trailer Promises More Dragons and Deadly Conflict
A bloody war is brewing, and dragons are at the heart of it all. HBO surprised fans with the release of the first official teaser trailer for House of the Dragon Season 2 at the recent CCXP convention in São Paulo, Brazil, offering a glimpse into the next chapter of Westeros history.
Spoiler alert: a brutal and unrelenting war between the Targaryens and the Hightowers is imminent. Based on George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the prequel spin-off TV series presents a fresh, gripping story on its own, telling an epic tale of dragons and power struggles.
While we’re still waiting for an official synopsis, Season 2 of the highly anticipated House of the Dragon is expected to pick up the story right where we last saw it in the first season. The new season will delve into the aftermath of the tragic death of Rhaenyra’s second-born son, Prince Lucerys “Luke” Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), who was killed by Alicent’s son, Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell). The news of her son’s death, combined with the heartbreaking miscarriage she experienced in the season finale episode, shifted Rhaenyra’s stance from a preference for peace to an intense desire for blood.
The teaser for House of the Dragon Season 2 teases a visceral blend of upheaval, conflict, and, of course, dragons, foreshadowing an impending clash in Westeros. The just-over-a-minute-long teaser trailer explores the aftermath of King Viserys’s death and witnesses the rise of King Aegon II. Rhys Ifans’ Ser Otto Hightower acknowledges this by saying in the opening minutes of the clip, “Errors were made in the hours following King Viserys’s death.” We then hear Queen Alicent Hightower stating, “The war will be fought, many will die, and the victor will eventually ascend the throne.”
Princess Rhaenys Targaryen (Eve Best) issues a grave warning which becomes the central theme for the teaser, “There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin — and no war so bloody as a war between dragons.” Her words are paired with various snippets of scenes from the upcoming season, including several intense battlefield shots and dragons and their riders engaging in fiery, bloody warfare, along with the expected mix of scheming, unspoken tension and brutal killing.
Accompanying the new House of the Dragon Season 2 teaser, HBO also officially confirmed a cadre of actors for key roles from George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood. Clinton Liberty will play Addam of Hull; Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome; Kieran Bew as Hugh; Tom Bennett playing Ulf; Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne; and Tom Taylor taking on the role of Lord Cregan Stark. Judging by the teaser, it looks like the forthcoming season is going to be packed with fierce action, violence and a lot of bloodshed. Thanks to regular updates from series co-creator Ryan Condal, we also know that House of the Dragon Season two will be a fiery season, introducing five new dragons to the mix. During the FYC screening in Los Angeles earlier this March, Condal teased, “You’re going to meet five new dragons.”
While there’s still no release date in sight, the new trailer hints that House of the Dragon Season 2 is set to hit screens sometime in the summer of 2024.
