Jason Momoa’s ‘Minecraft’ Live-Action Film Locks in Filming Date and Location

The long-awaited live-action Minecraft movie by Warner Bros. has faced its fair share of challenges, with numerous changes in directors and nearly a decade of development. However, things are finally looking up as the film gears up to enter production. A recent update from Production List sheds some light surrounding the film’s shooting schedule and location. Although specific details remain scarce, according to the Production List, filming for the Minecraft movie is scheduled to kick off on August 7, 2023, in picturesque New Zealand. However, the duration of the shoot has not been disclosed.

Warner Bros.’ Minecraft live-action movie has faced significant challenges during its nearly decade-long development. After going through a handful of directors, the film is now under the capable direction of Jared Hess, known for directing Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Moreover, the screenplay has undergone revisions by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer, who have reworked a previously approved script that was slated for production.

Although the specifics of the film’s plot are still a closely guarded secret, a logline shared by Warner Bros. does shed some light on the narrative. As per the logline, “The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.” The Minecraft movie recently nabbed Jason Momoa to lead its voice cast alongside the talented Matt Berry. However, the specific characters that Momoa and Berry will be bringing to life in the film have yet to be revealed.

The film is a joint venture between Vertigo, Legendary (as a co-financier), Mojang/Microsoft, and On the Roam, which is owned by Jason Momoa. Roy Lee, Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Momoa, Torfi Frans Olafsson, Vu Bui and the late Jill Messick will be serving as producers on the project, while Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts executive produce.

Warner Bros.’ live-action pic Minecraft movie is slated to hit theatres on April 4, 2025.
